The Go-Go’s were living the dream nearly two decades before the Spice Girls popularized “girl power”—a term originally coined in 1991 by the riot grrrl band Bikini Kill. 7Jefferson Airplane

If Jefferson Airplane were to come up in today’s conversation, they’d be seenas baby boomers with only a few radio hit songs like"Somebody to Love” and “White Rabbit.” That’s only because the band never achieved the same level of success as some of their collaborators, such as Crosby, Stills & Nash, well-known to have a lasting impact on American culture thanks to some of their songs like “Teach, Your Children.” Grace Slick was the powerhouse vocalist of this San Francisco psychedelic rock band.
Psychedelic rock was quite a popular music style in the ’60s, heavily inspired by mind-altering drugs like marijuana and LSD as they reflected on the drug-induced states. These songs became the soundtracks for the cultural exploration of the hippie movement.
The band morphed into Jefferson Starship in 1974 for their Dragon Fly EP, which came out the same year. However, Grace’s appearance in the band was not without controversy. She left the band in 1978 during Jefferson Starship’s performance in Europe. They were meant to perform in Germany during the Sunset festival,but she got drunk and refused to perform. However, Grace rejoined the band in 1981.
In 1985,an ugly lawsuit occurred after Paul Kantner’s departure, when the band changed its name to Starship, thus raising one of their biggest hits, “We Built This City,” which reached number one on the US chart. Grace left Starship in 1988 and rejoined the original Jefferson Airplane band. Following a short reunion tour, she retired from music, but has since performed occasionally.

Formed during their teenage years,Paramore initially consisted of Hayley Williams and her friends Jeremy Davis, Zac Farro, and Josh Farro. After signing with Fueled by Ramen, they brought on a rhythm guitarist and released their debut album,All We Know Is Falling. Since 2017, the band’s lineup has included Hayley as the lead vocalist, Taylor York as the lead guitarist, and Zac Farro as the drummer. Despite lineup changes, songs like “Last Hope,” “Ain’t It Fun,” “Ignorance,” and “Still Into You” remainfan favorites and some of Paramore’s best tracks.
5Evanescence
Evanescence, a beloved emo band, is making a comeback.Founded in New York in 1994, the band has gone through different changes, but the one thing that has remained constant since the beginning is their lead singer—who’s always been Amy Lee. Her heavenly voice has transformed songs like “Bring Me To Life,” their breakout hit. As the nu-metal subgenre was dying, their sound “breathed” new life into it.

Dolores O’Riordan was the frontwoman of The Cranberries until her death in 2018 after replacing their lead singer, Niall Quinn. Their sound was more dramatic, punk and folk, among other sub-genres. “Zombie” is perhaps their biggest hit. The song has held a strong presence since its release in 1994. Penned by Dolores, the song talked aboutviolence and particularly focused on The Troubles in Northern Ireland.
The song “Zombie” was a way for the band to condemn acts of violence, in response to the death of two children who were killed during an Irish Republican Army (IRA) bombing in Warrington, England, when the band was on tour.
The song went on to become one of the best-selling hits of its time, soaring to number one in multiple countries, includingGermany, France, and Australia, while also topping the alternative rock charts in the U.S. But this wasn’t their only hit. The Cranberries have delivered several memorable tracks, such as “Linger,” “Dreams,” “Ode to My Family,” and more. The band disbanded in 2019 following the death of their lead singer, shortly after releasing their final album, which had been recorded with her.

Florence + The Machine is an English indie rock band formed in London in 2007. Florence Welch is the lead vocalist.
