The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Powerwill likely show some of the best moments ofThe Silmarillion, including bits from the War of the Last Alliance. LikePeter Jackson’sHobbitandLord of the Ringsmovies,Rings of Poweronly has full rights to J.R.R. Tolkien’sThe HobbitandThe Lord of the Rings. Unlike the movies, however, it has acquired one-off rights to other texts as needed. As such, it remains guided by First and Second Age milestones (like the Last Alliance) from theLotRappendices, while pulling detail fromThe SilmarillionorUnfinished Talesas needed.
Amazon Prime Video’sThe Rings of Powerseason 2ended with the confirmation that the much-discussed Stranger original character was, of course, actually Gandalf. This pacing tactic reflected the season 1 finale reveal of Halbrand being Sauron. The season 3 finale will likely confirm that the Dark Wizard is a Blue Wizard, in line with the season finale trend and the showrunners' comments on aRedditQ&A. I don’t know if season 5’s finale will also include an identity reveal, as it will almost certainly adapt the War of the Last Alliance, but I can’t wait for the inevitable book highlights.

5Durin’s Folk Fighting Alongside The Elves And Men
Durin IV Fighting In The War Of The Last Alliance
Owain Arthur shone as Durin IV in his scenes with Robert Aramayo’s Elrond, and I’m looking forward to his biggest moments of glory in the War of the Last Alliance.Durin’s folk backed the Last Alliancewhen no other Dwarves would. Granted, this extraordinary uniqueness may not seem apparent in the show since not many other Dwarves have been explored for comparison.
Sauron’s War In The Rings Of Power Season 3 Can Explain A Key Part Of 2024’s The Lord Of The Rings Movie
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power could explain something missed by Warner Bros.' LotR movies, including The War of the Rohirrim.
Nonetheless, Arthur is awesome with a battleaxe in hand, which hasn’t been demonstrated enough just yet.We were sadly deprived of seeing the Dwarves of Moria at their full mightin the Siege of Eregion as they bailed on Elrond when he needed them the most. Although we understand the Dwarves' reasons, Elrond doesn’t, so it will be satisfying if the show can adapt this key part of the War, thereby finally giving the Dwarves and Elves the unity they are destined for.

Sauron Will Take A Battering Before His Final Defeat
It will be satisfying to see the side of light win for a change, after season 2’s looming darkness and what is sure to be Sauron’s increasing power inRings of Powerseason 3.Sauron is destined to be laid siege to in Barad-dûrby the Last Alliance, which will be formed of roughly all the species in Middle-earth, fascinatingly. I’m intrigued to see what showrunners Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne cook up in that regard.

We’ve already seen the appearance of Entwives, so perhaps they’ll also be fighting on Elendil and Gil-galad’s side when it comes to their stand against Sauron. Even more interestingly,Rings of Power’sbaby orchighlighted orc rights, which Tolkien discussed later in his life, confirming they were more than the canon fodder that they appeared to be in the movies. Perhaps some ofthe show’s sympathetic Orcs will be seen fighting against Sauronin the War of the Last Alliance.
Lord Of The Rings' Best Two-On-One Fight
Gil-galad and Elendil will fight Sauron two to one in the War of the Last Alliance, allowing for a repeat performance of one of the trilogy’s iconic scenes. This fight was secretly one of the best of the trilogy, sneakily appearing before the true story had really even set in at all, in the prologue toThe Fellowship of the Ring. However, this was not faithfully adapted.
The War of the Last Alliance was described in detail inThe Silmarillion, released in 1977.
That’s fair enough,Lord of the Rings’Second Agewasn’t the focus of the movies. However,The Rings of Powernow gets to give the War of the Last Alliance the star treatment, with a full season devoted to its buildup. The Fellowship of the Ringprologue didn’t even have two people toppling Sauron, it had one.I want to know how close to Wētā Workshop’s design the show dares to comewith its Last Alliance Sauron, and just how many pounds of horrifying steel Elendil and Gil-galad have to fight.
2Isildur Cutting The Ring From Sauron’s Finger
Isildur Will Get His Moment In The Rings Of Power
Isildur has been the half-useless Second Age equivalent of a high school dropout so far, andI’m eager to see how Maxim Baldry carries his moment of victoryin season 5. The younger version of the character glimpsed in Peter Jackson’s trilogy prologue has a lot of growing to do. I wonder if the show will use a time skip to communicate the seven-year siege of Barad-dûr in the War of the Last Alliance.
Harry Sinclair played Isildur inThe Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.
This would necessitate aging Baldry with prosthetics, CGI, or both, which intrigues me. Either way,Isildur will finally have his time in the limelightof the show in the war by cuttingLord of the Rings’One Ringfrom Sauron’s finger. Sauron’s finger may be burning to the touch, creating some interesting moments. Isildur will also get to redeem himself for the many times he shirked responsibility in the show, and I wonder if his future failure to destroy the ring will be somehow foreshadowed.
1Sauron Becoming Black Goo Again As His Spirit Flees
We Already Know What Sauron’s Final Defeat May Look Like
Sauron has already been killed once inThe Rings of Power, and I am looking forward to seeing how his next death compares. Of course,Sauron didn’t really die inThe Lord of the Rings, but his body did, leaving his spirit to slowly reform a physical shape. Until, of course, it couldn’t, as the One Ring was destroyed. Butthe death of the body that season 2 flashed back to was both fantastical and gruesome, with a blast of energy seeming to signify Sauron’s power leaving his body.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power may even show the creepy beginnings of Sauron’s black remains beginning to stir.
Meanwhile, Sauron’s body disappeared, leaving only black blood, which was ever-so-slowly reanimated by his lingering spirit.Sauron lost his shapeshifting power inLord of the Ringsafter Númenor fell. This has yet to happen, meaning Sauron will have a different form byRings of Powerseason 5. This huge and “Terrible” form will likely die in a similar way to the body of season 2’s flashback. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Powermay even show the creepy beginnings of Sauron’s black remains beginning to stir.
