Any adaptation of the acclaimed romance bookDungeons and Dramaby Kristy Boyce needs to showcase this major detail to be a great adaptation. Out of all theromance books released in 2024,this is by far my favorite because of the strong storytelling and clear care for the subject matter. The witty banter, the accurate depictions of being in high school with all it entails, and the love Boyce shows for both musical theater and D&D make it a must-read for me.

Though no adaptation has been announced, it would be great to see this story unfold onscreen, especially considering how strong a part D&D plays in Riley and Nathan’s love story. Most of the narrative takes place in Riley’s father’s game store, which gives a potential adaptation the opportunity toblend the fantasy and romance genresin a unique way.Dungeons and Dramacould showcase the actual events of the D&D campaign the characters play in, giving this romance adaptation a fun new twist.

Netflix would be the perfect platform to house the adaptation of BookTok’s high school romance hit that incorporates Dungeons & Dragons.

Dungeons & Drama’s Adaptation Should Showcase The Actual Events Of The Campaign

Dungeons and Dramashould showcase the actual events of the campaign Nathan and Riley play in, which is one of the integral points of the romance story. After Riley begins working at her father’s store, she joins Nathan’s D&D group as a bard named Elphaba. The humor grew beyond theWickedreference as Riley, to cast Bardic Inspiration, would sing Broadway classics to the group. Despite only having a few scenes of the characters actively playing, I think it would be great if an adaptation featured moments that took place in that campaign over just showing them at the table.

Blending the two could showcase both the stark immersion and how easily that is broken by anything inside and outside the table.

Having those moments would, to me, do something many pieces of D&D-related content have not fully done: showcase the reality of playing D&D.Many pieces of D&D-related media either show the characters playing a specific point in the campaign that foreshadows real events or are fully set in the world of D&D.Blending the two could showcase both the stark immersion and how easily that is broken by anything inside and outside the table. Not only would that really highlight why D&D is so popular, but it would also strengthen the romance and humor inDungeons and Drama’s potential adaptation.

How Showcasing The Campaign Would Strengthen Dungeons & Drama’s Adaptation

Seeing The Characters Succeed Or Fail Would Add To The Humor

Showcasing the campaign inDungeons and Dramawould strengthen the romance and humor in the adaptation, adding another layer to the story.Throughout the book, the campaign features the characters getting into many funny situations, such as constantly leaving one character behind, accidentally confronting some ogres, etc.Seeing those moments would only amplify the humor as we witness just how badly the characters messed up. Conversely, seeing something like Riley’s many performances would add even more humor and heart as they can be comically over-the-top and allow for some great visuals.

Adding these moments would also enhance the romance between Riley and Nathan as we can really see how their character choices impact their real-life relationship.Nathan’s choice to shield Riley could play up both her shock and Sophie’s jealousy, demonstrating their already fraying connection.Riley’s choice to hold back Bardic Inspiration could be made more dramatic, giving the story a unique third-act break to otherromantic book adaptations. By featuring these moments, aDungeons and Dramaadaptation can, ultimately, stand out from other romance stories much like the book did while still keeping to its original tropes.
