Sony is reportedly working on a newGod of Wargame with a surprising new setting. The action series has been widely praised for its 2018 reboot, which took protagonist Kratos out of his traditional Greek mythology setting and plopped him down in a world of Norse gods, valkyries, and giants to great effect. Both the eponymous 2018God of Warand its direct sequel,God of War: Ragnarok have received rave reviews. But now, it may be time for theGod of Warfranchise to explore a new direction, and one industry insider says he knows what that is.

According to insider Daniel Richtman on hisPatreon, as reported byThe Game Post,Sony may be in the process of hiring actors for the nextGod of Wargame, which may have an Egyptian mythology-inspired setting. This is based on information Richtman allegedly received from a leaker, who, he says, told him that Sony is currently “casting Middle Eastern actors for an unknown AAA game.” Richtman surmised that this game was the nextGod of War.

New God Of War Game Could Take Place In Egyptian Mythology

What The Latest God Of War Rumor Says

Richtman is a frequent leaker of all things movies, TV, and video games, so there’s some merit to his assertion that Sony is working on the nextGod of Wargame, and it’s set amid Egyptian mythology. However, nothing on the matter has yet to be confirmed or denied by Sony, so this is, for the time being, just a rumor.

However, it is worth noting thatSony is already rumored to bedeveloping a newGod of War.Ragnarokwas intended to serve as a conclusion to the Norse mythology saga, so there’s a good chanceGod of Waris now turning its eyes eastward.

Rumored New God Of War Game Already Has A Perfect Story To Tell

There are rumors that a new God of War game could be in the works, and Ragnarök has already set up a perfect story for the next game.

This news also comes on the heels of the news thatSony abruptly canceled several gamesin the works by its Bend and Bluepoint studios. These apparently included alive-serviceGod of Wargame, likely set to be the next entry in the franchise. Of course, it’s unknown just how far along this project was, or what a live-serviceGod of Wargame would even look like, so it’s possible this was being developed concurrently with the next mainline entry.

Nor do we know when any further news on this supposed EgyptianGod of Warcould be revealed. If Sony is still hiring voice actors,it’s likely still a long way from release, so an impending announcement is unlikely. Considering rumors that Sony will hold a State of Play in February (as it’s done for the past four years), the best we can hope for is a teaser at that event, maybe with more to be revealed in late 2025 or early 2026.

Though Nothing Is Confirmed, This New God Of War Is Interesting

An Egyptian Setting Makes Sense For God Of War

But whether the rumors are true or not,God of Wargoing to Egypt just makes sense. Greek, Norse, and Egyptian are typically considered the “big three” when it comes to extensively studied and readily accessible bodies of myth; it’d admittedly be weird (albeit fascinating) if Sony followed up the the Norse saga withsomething likeGod of War: Etruria. But besides that, there are a lot of interesting stories to be told within the Egyptian mythological canon.

Landmarks inspired by the vast, barren Sahara desert and lush, fertile Nile valley would make a great aesthetic change from the Norse duology’s bifrost-coated landscape. Its anthropomorphic animal deities would make great characters, and battles against Sphinxes, serpents, jackals, even giant dung beetles, would be thrilling. Seeing Kratos finally resolve his lingering conflicts in the world of Norse myth, only to be thrust into another unfamiliar environment, would certainly be one way to give the story new momentum. We don’t know whether this new, Egyptian myth-inspiredGod of Waris real, but if it is, it certainly sounds intriguing.
