Warning: Contains spoilers forSpider-Society #1The version ofSpider-Womanfirst seen inSpider-Man: Across the Spider-Versehas finally made her Marvel Comics debut, and she may be the Spider-Society’s only hope. When this version of Jessica Drew appears, Miles Morales, Anya Corazon, and many of the other established Spider-People don’t know who she is.Because of that, the villains don’t know her either, making her the perfect secret weapon against multiversal threats.

In the filmSpider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,Jessica Drew of Earth-332 and Spider-Man 2099 are the creators of a new version of the Spider-Society, a team of Spider-Heroes from across the multiverse.InSpider-Society#1 by Alex Segura and Scott Godlewski, Earth-332’s Spider-Woman is one of the few Spider-Heroes saved by Madame Web from the new team of multiversal villains, the Sinister Squadron.

Spider-Society 001 (2024) 024

This is the character’s official first appearance on Earth-616, Marvel’s main comic universe continuity, as her first comic appearance was inEdge of Spider-Verse#4, but that was a flashback that took place in her home universe.

Spider-Woman’s Existence Makes the Multiverse Even More Complex

This version of Jessica Drew first appeared within the pages of a comic inEdge of Spider-Verse #4, written by Nilah Magruder with art by Marcus Williams, but that was in her own universe. If the logic of the character’s appearance in the film and inSpider-Society#1 is to be followed, Earth-332 is implied to be an animated universe outside comic continuity, and the art depicting the events of the comic is just that, a depiction of the events. If this Jessica Drew is seen having an adventure, unless it is animated, it cannot be accepted as fact.

Spider-Society #1 is the Anya Corazon Story “Madame Web” Should Have Been

When the Spider-Verse comes under attack from another multiversal threat, Madame Web chooses Anya Corazón’s Spider-Girl to lead the Spider-Society.

Across the Spider-Verse’s2022 press screenings designated Jessica Drew’s home universe as Earth-404, with the Earth-332 designation coming from the film’s art book.

Now there are not only alternate universes and timelines to keep track of, but the actual artistic medium the character is depicted in creates new versions of already known characters. With this in mind, the multiversal possibilities for more secret weapons and adventures has already been heavily established inAcross the Spider-Verse, withmany other versions of Spider-Man appearing, such as the1967 animated series hero, and Insomniac’s Playstation exclusive version of the character.

What Other Secrets Do Madame Web and the Spider-Society Have?

The upcomingSpider-Noirseries starring Nicolas Cage will hopefully answer many of the questions surrounding the existence of these alternate universe Spider-Heroes. This version of Spider-Man exists in an interesting spot that could answer many of the questions surrounding Earth-332’s existence and the rules of the new multiverse, as he has appeared in video games, animation, and comic books, and soon to be live action, all portrayed or implied to be portrayed by the same actor. With this new revelation that all Spider-Heroes exist in comic continuity, the possibility for Madame Web to debut even more “secret weapons” is endless.

Cage’s Spider-Man Noir will join Harley Quinn in the very small group of characters to originate in an animated project, then make the leap to comics, to finally being adapted into live action.

Isabela Merced as Anya Corazon aka Araña Spider-Woman in Madame Web and Marvel Comics

InSpider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,whenSpider-Man 2099is explaining the Spider-Society and the shattered multiverse to Miles, a very important image of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man fromSpider-Man 3appears. Maguire is shown attempting to rip the Venom symbiote from his face, implying a universe where the two were never separated at the end of the film. Tom Hardy’sVenomuniverse is also accessible to the Spider-Society as the Spot, played by Jason Schwartzman, hops into the convenience store frequented by the Lethal Defender.

While it may seem like a small detail, the appearance of theSpider-WomanfromAcross the Spider-Versemeans that, finally, a showdown between all the various Spider-People from every universe, across all artistic mediums, may finally happen between the pages of a comic book, even if it never happens on the big screen.
