Skipping “Middle Decks” implies part of the story being glazed over

In just a few weeks,Star Trek: Lower Decksseason 5 could be flung into the near future in “Upper Decks.” Although there could be other explanations for the installment’s title, one of the most salient theories, given the context of appearing in the final season, is that Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) and his fellow junior officers will be shown at a much later point in their Starfleet careers.Star Trek: Lower Decks' larger story was always quietly pointing to an ending like this, but the show’s title has long been something of a self-concluding prophecy.

The animated comedy is so named due to the main characters' living quarters being located in the bowels of the ship. As a Starfleet officer rises through the ranks, they tend to be rewarded with better lodgings. So, in “Upper Decks,“Boimler and his friends could very well find themselves as part of the bridge crewon the USS Cerritos. With those promotions would come improved living arrangements, and as such, the title and concept of the show would no longer make any sense. Therefore, “Upper Decks” is likely the beginning of the end forStar Trek: Lower Decks.
