Atomfallis filled with intrigue, but one of the more compelling mysteries is the voice on the phone. As you explore the Windscale quarantine zone, you’ll come across plenty of England’s iconic red telephone booths, which will occasionally be ringing. On the other end of the line is a gravelly, demanding voice. The owner of that voice is likely the first person to offer you an escape route from the quarantine zone, buttheir identity is one ofAtomfall’s longest-running mysteries.

[Warning: Spoilers for Atomfall.]

You’ll encounter the voice almost immediately, in a phone booth down the hill from the bunker where the game begins. As you progress throughAtomfall, phones will ring to beckon you, and if you answer, the voice will almost uniformly tell you to be wary of others offering a way out of the quarantine zone.Atomfall’s lead systemfunnels into a handful of main questlines, all leading to disparate endings, and the voice cautions you not to trust anyone but them.

The Voice’s Identity Is Never Revealed

Atomfall’s Lingering Mystery

Even if you follow their advice throughoutAtomfall, who the voice on the phone belongs to will not be revealed. Over the course of the game, the voice is repeatedly adamant that Oberon must be destroyed, but finding your way to the center of the Winscale plant and doing just that won’t reward you with any answers.

Not Expecting a Call is a trophy/achievement for beating the game without ever answering the phone.

If you destroy Oberon, a phone in the Windscale plant will ring during your escape, and answering it will see the voice telling you to return to where it all started, the bunker where you woke up at the beginning of the game. Going there, you’ll answer another phone, gas will be released into the room, your character falls unconscious, and the credits roll without any clarification.

Who The Voice On The Phone Is Could Be Revealed In Atomfall’s DLC

Wicked Isle Expansion Doesn’t Yet Have A Release Date

There seems to be one more chance for a more revelatory conclusion to this oddAtomfallarc: the upcomingWicked Islestory expansion. Unfortunately, there is almost no information about the planned DLC, except its name and the fact that it’s included in theAtomfallDeluxe Edition. Based on the multiple possible endings ofAtomfall, though,it seems unlikely thatWicked Islewould take place after the main story, so any information on the voice would therefore undermine the mysterious ending.

Atomfall: All Crafting Recipes & How To Get Them

Atomfall’s crafting mechanic is pretty simple, but finding all the recipes scattered around the game can be a lot trickier, but worth your time.

In myreview ofAtomfall, I alluded to being disappointed in some questions remaining unanswered, and this is the big one. It feels to me like a half-baked commentary somewhere along the lines ofBioShock’s famous twist. There is something to be said about players following the commands of a disembodied voice that refuses to answer questions, butAtomfallis so character-driven that the hanging mystery feels out of place. Given the ending where you follow the voice back to the bunker, I don’t expect its identity to ever be revealed.
