The live-actionAvatar: The Last Airbenderhas received a major production update. Netflix’s adaptation of the animated Nickelodeon series of the same name stars Gordon Cormier as the long-lost airbending Avatar Aang, Kiawentiio as waterbender Katara, Ian Ousley as Katara’s brother Sokka, Dallas Liu as the disgraced firebender Prince Zuko, and Elizabeth Yu as Zuko’s sister Princess Azula. Miya Cech will be joining the cast ofAvatar: The Last Airbenderseason 2as the iconic, sarcastic earthbender Toph.

On the officialNetflixX account, the streaming platform shared a behind-the-scenes image fromAvatar: The Last Airbenderseason 2 along with the caption “THE GAANG HAS ASSEMBLED FOR SEASON 2.” The image shows Cormier, Yu, Ousley, Liu, and Kiawentiio in what looks to be a production office, joined by Cech. All six stars areholding up scripts for an episode from the new season, watermarked with their names. Check out the post below:

What This Production Update Means For Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2

Principal Photography Is Probably Coming Soon

While the exact production timeline of the new season of the Netflix show is still unknown, the scripts in the image are table read drafts that are dated August 03, 2025. This could indicate that pre-production is well underway. If theAvatar: The Last Airbendercastwas indeed gathered for a table read,it stands to reason that the show is being shot in the near future. Should that be the case, the timeline may be clear enough to allow for the release date of the new season to be roughly predicted.

It has major post-production needs before a full season can drop on the platform.

If the new season follows the same timeline asAvatar: The Last Airbenderseason 1, itwill likely take roughly seven months to shoot. Because of the show’s heavy visual effects, it has major post-production needs before a full season can drop on the platform. In fact, the hiatus between season 1 wrapping and premiering was 20 months. While the show becoming a hit may see that timeline being truncated wherever possible, its post-production limitations mean that it still seems unlikely that the new season will premiere before 2026.

Our Take On The Avatar: The Last Airbender Update

Despite The Delay, The Show Is Progressing Smoothly

Ultimately, theAvatar: The Last Airbendercast and crew have been assembled relatively quickly after the show became a hit on the platform following its launch in February 2024. Especially if the production shoots the already-renewed season 3 back-to-back with season 2, this will allow the next two seasons to have a smoother release schedule and continue the stories of the young core characters without the actors aging too far away from their roles.
