WARNING! This article contains SPOILERS for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice! In addition to revealing the fates of a few other surprise characters,Beetlejuice 2confirms that one of the original movie’s supporting figures didn’t die actually during their 1988 bout with Betelgeuse. Tim Burton’s 2024 sequel seesBeetlejuice’s Deetz familyreturn to Winter River after the tragic death of patriarch Charles, who died being eaten by a shark after his plane crashed into the ocean. At the funeral and wake,Charles’ wife Delia (Catherine O’Hara) and daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder) reunite with some familiar facesfrom the original movie.

Alongside the Deetzes and Michael Keaton’s Betelgeuse, only one supporting character from the 1988 horror-comedy returns inBeetlejuice 2’s cast. This happens to be “Little” Jane Butterfield, the now grown-up realtor daughter of the Maitlands and Deetzes’ former realtor, Jane Butterfield. The sequel doesn’t bring back the Deetzes’ friends Otho (actor Glenn Shadix passed away in 2010), Dick Cavett’s Bernard, the Dean couple, Beryl, or Grace from the original movie’s iconic “Day-O” scene, butBeetlejuice 2does still clarify the aftermath for one of these characters following Betelgeuse’s antics in 1988.

Maxie’s Survival Finally Ends Speculation That The Dean Couple Were Killed In Beetlejuice

The Crash Into The Roof Didn’t Kill Maxie & Sarah Dean

ConsideringMaxie and his wife, Sarah, were launched through the Winter River house’s roof head-first by Betelgeuse, there had been a long-standingtheory that the Dean couple died inBeetlejuice’s ending. It seemed unlikely that the two would have survived the crash through the roof and the fall back to the ground, butBeetlejuice 2confirms that at least Maxie lived through the ordeal. Considering the rest of the bunch who experienced the “Day-O” possession dance are left unmentioned in the sequel, it’s unclear what exactly happened to them after facing Keaton’s Betelgeuse.
