Ryan Reynoldsspeaks out in defense of hisActors on Actorspairing withAndrew Garfield. Run byVariety,Actors on Actorsis a series that takes two famous, well-regarded actors, and has the pair have a conversation on camera about their careers and recent work.Varietyrecently announced their lineup of 2024 actor pairings, which included Garfield and Reynolds in conversation. Reynolds' biggest role of the year was the MCU featureDeadpool & Wolverine, while Garfield’s was the well-ratedOscar hopefulWe Live in Time.

Now,Reynoldstakes to social media to react to criticism of hisActors on Actorsappearance. The original post from @drivcmycar made a subtly snide comment, noting “andrew garfield talking about playing a husband and father who’s wife decides to forgo cancer treatment and ryan reynolds talking about playing deadpool.” Defending this unlikely pairing,Reynolds agrees that “Andrew’s a genius,” but maintained his desire to “speak up in defense of comedy.“While drama is more overtly difficult, he noted that comedy “has an added dimension in that it’s meant to look and feel effortless.”

What Reynolds' Statement Means For Deadpool & Comedy

Comedy Is Often Underappreciated

On its face, Reynolds and Garfield’sActors on Actorspairing is not the most obvious. Other duos on the list are a lot more logical, such as Drew Starkey and Harris Dickinson, who both play young adult love interests of those decades older than them inQueerandBabygirl, respectively.Reynolds is also one of the few comedic actors on the list, which includes many dramatic actors like Zendaya, Adrien Brody, and Daniel Craig. As such, Reynolds and Garfield are one of the more unlikely pairings on theActors on Actorslist.

That said, Reynolds makes some very noteworthy points about theimportance of recognizing comedy’s difficulty and value. While awards ceremonies like the Golden Globes and the Emmys do recognize comedy as its own distinguished category, too often do the Oscars neglect the year’s major comedies when it comes to choosing theirBest Picture nominees. Reynolds, however, recognizes that “both disciplines are beautiful,” drama and comedy, emphasizing the value of each.

Our Take On The Actors On Actors Pairing

While some might still think it is a mismatch, I think thatGarfieldand Reynolds could create one of the more interesting conversations on theActors on Actorsslate this year. Both are seasoned, veteran actors in their own right. However, Reynolds' career andGarfield’s careerhave operated in very different spheres over time, with Garfield’s work generally skewing far more dramatic than Reynolds'.Reynolds' deep appreciation for both drama and comedy, however, proves that he can participate in a thoughtful acting discussion for the show, even if the character of Deadpool is far more goofy.
