James Gunn has announced thatCreature Commandos, theDCU’s first official release, is getting a second season, even as the first instalment currently airs. The announcement came courtesy of the DCU boss' X account, and was backed up by official word from the studio. Gunn unveiled the news with the promise of more monsters inCreature Commandosseason 2:

“You wanted monsters? Well, you’re getting even more. We’re coming back forDCU boss' X accountseason two! But don’t worry, we’ve still got plenty left this season for you. Catch new episodes of #CreatureCommandos every Thursday, with the season one finale dropping January 9 exclusively on

Creature Commandosseason 1 currently sits on an impressive 95% on Rotten Tomatoes - the same score as HBO’sThe Penguin- with an Audience Score of 80%. There’s no word in either Gunn’s post or the official announcement on when the second season will drop, or which of the principal cast will return. The second point would spoil too much ofCreature Commandos' future episodes, of course, but Gunn presumably has more free time on his slate afterSuperman’s release in 2025, andPeacemakerseason 2.

Here’s Warner Bros' announcement:

The critically acclaimed and fan-favorite Max Original adult animated seriesCREATURE COMMANDOS, written and executive produced by filmmaker and DC Studios Co-Chair James Gunn, has been renewed for a second season. New episodes debut weekly every Thursday on Max, with the season one finale dropping January 9.

The news was heralded by Gunn and Peter Safran in the studio’s statement, who took time to thank the team at Max, and calledCreature Commandosa “record-breaking release”:

“We’re thrilled to team up with Max for another season of Creature Commandos mayhem. From our spectacular first season of Peacemaker to the astonishing run ofThe Penguinto the record-breaking launch ofCreature Commandos, Max has consistently delivered above industry expectations and beyond our wildest imaginings. Thank you, Casey, Sarah, Pia, Sono and the entire team for your tremendous support of DC Studios. We are proud to call Max home.”

What Creature Commandos' Season 2 Announcement Means For The DCU

Confidence is the first thing that comes to mind. Marvel Studios were somewhat famously reserved with their own plans for second seasons of MCU TV shows, with onlyWhat If…?andLokigetting direct follow-ups (as well as the smaller scale event ofI Am Groot!).Creature Commandosseason 2’s announcement timeline beats both of those projects, though technically, 2025’sPeacemakerseason 2 is the DCU’s first second season, if you ignore the timeline wrinkles.

The impressive Rotten Tomatoes score and the broken record Gunn and Safran’s statement highlights have clearly been enough to warrant renewal. Quite what that record is remains to be seen, as official viewing figures are yet to be revealed: logic would suggest that the record relates to Max streaming figures. Either way, the announcement follows the recent confirmation of theDCU’sClayfacemovie, which is based on a script by Mike Flanagan.

Beyond his role overseeing the DCU, Gunn’s current slate includes onlySupermanandPeacemakerseason 2, which both release in 2025.Creature Commandosseason 2 presumably continues his active role in writing and directing DCU projects, setting him apart from his Marvel counterpart, Kevin Feige. Gunn also shared a holiday message made for him by his “friends at Studio IAM and our talented animators at Bobby Pills Studio”:

Amy Gravitt, Executive Vice President, HBO & Max Comedy Programming offered her thoughts on the renewal:“Only James Gunn could have conjured this wild band of misfit monsters who tug at your heart and force you to root passionately for them. We couldn’t be more delighted to continue their stories with James, Dean Lorey, Peter Safran and our fantastic partners at DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation.”

And Peter Girardi, Executive Vice President, Alternative Programming, Warner Bros. Animation adds“Thanks to the brilliant imagination of James and the talent of our amazing artists, DC fans fell in love with this new family of heroes. We are excited to continue this wild ride with our partners at Max. You want more monsters, you’re getting more monsters!”

Our Take On Creature Commandos Season 2’s Announcement

Let’s be honest, there is near-infinite potential for further stories in theCreature Commandosuniverse: DC has a huge number of monstrous and supernatural characters who would make good additions to Amanda Waller’s inhuman team, including the likes of Gorilla Grodd, Man-Bat, King Shark (who Gunn previously used inThe Suicide Squad, of course), andWonder Woman 1984villain Cheetah. And that’s without talking about the off-world options. The potential there is undeniable.

Gunn also knows how to handle these projects. Cynics have, in fact, pointed out that Gunn has followed a fairly similar model for all four of his major superhero projects to date:Guardians Of The Galaxy,The Suicide Squad,Peacemaker, and nowCreature Commandosall follow unconventional, antihero supers thrown together by circumstances and deadly missions. But then, when records are being toppled, what’s the issue?
