AnMCUboss has declared thatDaredevil: Born Againis going to emulate the hit showGame of Thronesin one key way.Daredevil: Born Againis slated to premiereon Disney Plus in March 2025 and will see a slew ofcharacters from the originalDaredevilreprising their roles. Despite these characters returning to the small screen, however,Daredevil: Born Againwill not strictly be a continuation of the original show and will instead be more of a soft reboot taking place as its own original story nestled firmly inthe MCU’s wider timeline.
When commenting on what fans can expect from the show at an ABC panel at D23 (viaNerdist), Marvel Studios' head of streaming, television, and animation, Brad Winderbaum, suggested thatthe plot evokes the dark and sometimes controversial tone of the wildly popularGame of Thrones. It will also evoke the complex politics ofGame of Thronesas several New York figures fight for control of the city. Winderbaum also suggested, however, that despite its violence and dark moments, there is ultimately hope to be found. His full quote is as follows:
“Imagine if New York City was as intricate and problematic and scary as the world of Game of Thrones. All these forces vying for control, and it can be really hopeful at times, and really violent at times, and dark-but also there’s light at the end of the tunnel if you could just fight for it.”
The Comments Can Only Mean Good Things
Brad Winderbaum seems to be suggesting thatDaredevil: Born Againwill pull no punches regarding violence. This is, after all, a cornerstone feature of the distinctly visceralGame of Thrones,meaning it will likely emulate the same violent sequences of its TV-MA-rated predecessor,Daredevil. Thankfully,Deadpool & Wolverine’s successproves that the MCU can capably pull off a mature age rating for a franchise that is typically confined to PG-13. Winderbaum’s comments also suggest thatDaredevil: Born Again’s 18 episodes will comfortably house the impossibly engaging political intrigue inGame of Thrones.
The MCU’s Disney Plus offerings typically comprise 6 or 9 episodes, makingDaredevil: Born Againits most expansive series thus far.
Nevertheless,it doesn’t appear as if Winderbaum is necessarily suggesting thatDaredevil: Born Againis primed to emulate the sheer scale and spectacle ofGame of Thronesin later seasons. WhileDaredevil: Born Againboasts a Marvel Studios budget, it is more likely to leave cosmic spectacles on a par with dragons burning down cities tothe mainline MCU movies. Instead,Daredevil: Born Againmay resemble the earlier seasons ofGame of Thrones, in which compelling politicking and scaled-down action sequences took center stage.

I find it hard to ignorethe confidence inherent in Winderbaum comparingDaredevil: Born Againto one of the most successful TV shows of all time. The pressure is certainly on for Marvel to do Daredevil justice after his initial outing made such a significant splash among fans. Perhaps Winderbaum’s comparison is indicative of the confidence he has in its success, if not a ploy to generate hype for the show by invokingGame of Thronesand its incredible cultural impact.

Either way, I think the more toned-down early seasons ofGame of Thronesare exactly whatDaredevil: Born Againshould remind us of. The fact that theDaredevil: Born Againvillainhas been confirmed as Muse is a big sign that this will be the case as he is one of Marvel Comics' most understated yet terrifyingly R-rated villains. Kingpin’s latest move to seize the Iron Throne of New York - the Mayor’s office - is also a positive sign. Meanwhile, there is no shortage of New York-based MCU characters to contribute to a web of compelling stories.
