Deadpoolhas a long history of relationships with morally questionable characters, and now he’s finally getting the chance to meet the villain who might be even more of a freak than him. While the two would be perfect together, the only problem is thatthey might just kill each other before that happens.
A new preview forDeadpool #13- from Cody Ziglar, Rogê Antônio, Guru-eFX and Joe Sabino - shows Wade Wilson’s first meeting with Solem,the adamantium-skinned villain who’s the perfect match for Deadpoolin both temperament and violence.
As seen inDeadpool#3, by the same team, Solem gifted the villain Death Gripone of the two Muramasa blades- one of the few weapons which can bypass Wade’s healing factor, and which Death Grip used to (temporarily) kill Deadpool. Now, Wade’s out to get Death Grip, and that involves meeting Solem. From these few pages, the two are already getting on like a house on fire.

Solem was first introduced inWolverine #6, from Benjamin Percy and Viktor Bogdanović. Solem is a mutant from Arakko, an ancient nation of mutants lost in another dimension until the eventX of Swords. Recruited as one of the fighters in a huge Arrako vs X-Men contest, Solem immediately proved himself aworthy rival and opposite to Wolverine. While Wolverine has an adamantium skeleton, Solem has adamantiumskin. An expert killer who is extremely flirty with pretty much everyone he meets (but especially those he’s trying to kill),Solem is Deadpool without the pop culture references and self-hatred.
The big question is what Solem’s eventual goal is. Solem went to literal Hell to retrieve the Muramasa Blades duringX of Swords, but he seemingly gave one of the priceless swords to Death Grip on a whim. He claims that he’s just interested to see what happens, butmaybe he wanted to bring Deadpool into his orbit. After all, there’s nothing Solem loves more than a challenge (except maybe aliaison), and Deadpool could be the perfect candidate to offer him both.
In the comics,Deadpool is canonically omnisexual, but he’s had precious few queer relationships that actually played out in front of readers. With both Wade and Solem being snarky, queer, outsider antiheroes who it’s almost impossible to kill, they have a lot more in common than they do to argue about - including tortured pasts, sinceSolem was imprisoned for a century by Arakko’s ruling family. However, Wade’s self-loathing may force him to make an enemy out of someone who is similar to him in so many ways.

Solem Is the Perfect Wolverine Rival, So Should Deadpool Really Get Involved?
The only major argument against Deadpool and Solem being together is that Solem deserves to be withWolverine. When Benjamin Percy created Solem, I’d argue that he knewexactlywhat he was doing in giving Logan yetanotherrival with homoerotic undertones. Sure,Deadpool could probably match Solem’s freak a little better, but it’s more fun seeing the traditionally uber-macho Logan paired up with someone who can’t help but overtly and performatively flirt with him.
That said, Solem’s not really in the market for monogamy, so much like fans, there’s no real reason for him to choose between the very different joys of Wolverine andDeadpool.
