Destiny 2has given its players the first view of what to expect from its roadmap in 2025. TheDestinyfranchise has been in a rough spot lately, as multiple layoffs have created worry about the game’s future. ThoughThe Final Shapewas a massive success critically, it brought in less money than any of the previous yearly expansions. The plan until the start of the new roadmap is for three episodes that cover stories wrapping up the “power vacuum” that has been created.
The first episode, Echoes, which recently concluded, was based aroundthe Vex and Maya Sundaresh. Releasing on June 20, 2025, episode two, Revenant, focuses on the Scorn and the remaining Fallen Houses. Lastly, episode three, Heresy, scheduled for July 26, 2025, will focus on the remnants of the Hive and a return to the Dreadnaught. Unfortunately, the reception of Echoes was lukewarm at best, and it did not feel much different from the old seasonal model. However, Bungie said that Revenant and Heresy would correct many of the issues in episode one.

A New Saga Begins
Once again,Destiny 2is changing its content style for 2025.Destiny 2will move from one large annual expansion to two medium ones. Though not directly compared, these could be on par with the early DLCs of both games or close to whatRise of Ironwas at the end of the first game. These DLCs have been hit or miss, but given the recent track record of more expansions being good than bad, as Lightfall was the only large stumble, it is a small ray of hope for the franchise. Free Update Four
Spring 2026
One of these expansions, codenamed Apollo, will start in Summer 2025, while the second, Behemoth, will launch in Winter 2025. During these expansions,there will be four free major content updates that run alongside them released every three months. These are described as on par with the content currently given by seasons, but the move to free access is a boon. Each content update will have a Rewards Pass similar to those already in the game, but these will likely need to be paid for.
Along with these content changes, the way players acquire gear will also change. Bungie islooking to have escalating levels of difficulty that reward higher tiers of loot the larger the challenge. Essentially, new armor and weapons will have a tier from one to five that shows how good they are. These weapons will be split into reward pools that are unique based on the activity and incentivize replayability across all modes. These changes may also helpevery character stat inDestiny 2feel impactful again after feeling second to gear in recent years.
How Destiny 2’s Storytelling Is Changing
A Story In The Hands Of The Player
Another way Bungie wants to change in 2025 is by making the storytelling less linear. This is explained in the dev blog that,starting with Apollo,Destiny 2stories will have a set starting point, but after that, it is up to the player to decide where they explore next. This method seems to lean more towards those used in open-world RPGs and could be a boon. However, it will be crucial to see how these plot points convene and flow.
Destiny 2: Every Character Stat (& How They Work)
Character stats are one of the most important aspects of Destiny 2, regardless if players are engaging in any PvE or PvP activity in the game.
Apollo’s story will be the start of the next saga theDestinyfranchise will cover. Episodes two and three will hint towards this, but will fully begin with Apollo. It will also be interesting to see how long this saga goes on and through what medium. Many in the community have been clamoring for a full reset toDestiny 3to fix many of the core technical issues and limitations the current game has. However, it would seem Bungie is confident in progressing withDestiny 2for the foreseeable future, as no plans for any sequel have been found.
Overall, the next two years ofDestiny 2are crucial for the popular Sci-Fi franchise. After putting out some of their best work inThe Final Shape, Bungie once again has its backs to the wall trying to keep the title afloat. Though many of these changes sound good on paper, it won’t be till it is in the hands of the players that its ultimate worth will be defined.
