Dexter: Original Sinbecomes Showtime’s most-viewed show in 10 years. Created by originalDextercreator Clyde Phillips, the prequel show premiered on Paramount+ with Showtime in December, bringing to life the early years of Dexter Morgan, with Patrick Gibson taking over the lead role from Michael C. Hall. After a generally well-received start, theDexter: Original Sinseason 1 finalebrought the show to an end this past weekend, bringing young Dexter one step closer to becoming the serial killer audiences fell in love with back when the original show first launched in 2006.
Now, Showtime reveals that theDexter: Original Sinseason 1 finale was the most-watched episode of the season, scoring 2.68 million global viewers, which is up 30% from the premiere. Dexteris the show that just doesn’t seem to die. After a divisive season 8 brought the original show to an end in 2013, Hall returned as the title serial killer forDexter: New Bloodin 2021, which was presented as a do-over of sorts for the character’s ending. That show was evidently popular enough to lead to further franchise expansion, and the release ofOriginal Sin. Now, despite his character seemingly dying at the end ofNew Blood,Hall is set to reprise his iconic role in theupcomingDexter: Resurrection, a sequel show that reportedly takes place in New York City.
Dexter: Resurrection’s Harshest Character Reunion Just Got A More Brutal Setup In The Prequel Show
An expected character reunion in the upcoming sequel series Dexter: Resurrection just got even more interesting after Dexter: Original Sin episode 7.
The performance of the prequel show, however, suggestsResurrectionmay not be the onlyDextercontent on the horizon. Though nothing has been announced just yet, it’s entirely possible thatDexter: Original Sinseason 2will get the green light, continuing the murderous misadventures of Gibson’s younger take on the character. The prequel hasn’t been billed as a limited series and the finale leaves plenty of narrative threads left to explore, so it certainly seems like a sophomore outing isn’t off the table following the release ofResurrectionthis summer.

The Series Has Plenty To Enjoy
Dexteris now almost a 20-year-old franchise, and few likely would have believed it would still be going when it first premiered back in 2006. Hall himself has been a major reason for the show’s success, and it’s clear that he’s perfect for this character. WithOriginal Sin’s success, however,Gibson has proven himself a worthy actor to be playing the younger version of the character.
In hisDexter: Original Sinfinale reviewforScreenRant, Greg MacArthur calls the series “a triumph for the Dexter franchise and a blueprint for all modern prequel series.” On Rotten Tomatoes, the series enjoys a 68% critics score an a 76% Popcornmeter score.

Even though parts ofOriginal Sinfeel a little like cosplay of the original show, there are enough strong performances and narrative twists and turns to make it entertaining. It remains to be seen whetherDexter: Original Sinwill be getting another season, but this latest viewership data is certainly a promising sign.
