The Day of the Jackal (2024)follows a highly skilled assassin who racks up quite the death toll over just 10 episodes, but he is not the only killer seen on screen. The series is an updated and contemporary adaptation of an earlier 1973 film, which was in turn based on a novel from a few years earlier by Frederick Forsyth. Theseries stars Eddie Redmayneas the titular Jackal, and Lashana Lynch as the determined MI6 agent Bianca Pullman, who is in hot pursuit.

While Jackal is clearly intended to a be a villain, with his role as an assassin being a clear sign of his morals, the series explores the complexity of everyone’s motivations. From the very first episode, there are numerous deaths.These range from targets, to bystanders, and even people who stand in MI6’s way.

The Anonymous Janitor Meets A Tragic End
In the opening scene of the series, the Jackal is listening to a tape recording of a voice as he learns to mimic it. Moments later, it is revealed that the voice and face belong to the first victim seen on the show, Rufus.This elderly man is a janitor who works for the company which the Jackal’s next target is the owner of.While his death is not seen on screen, the charging cable seen around his neck makes it clear that he is indeed a victim of the Jackal’s ruthless operation.

Disguised as Rufus, the Jackal infiltrates the Fest offices and manages to get on the same floor as Elias Fest, Manfred’s son. The Jackal eventually drops his disguise when he pulls a gun, shooting the security guard on that floor,and several others within the offices.

22Manfred Fest
It appears that the Jackal’s shooting at Elias was simply to lure his father, Manfred, into a public setting.Despite being surrounded by many guards, Jackal sets up a sniper more than two miles away from his target, and with tremendous skill, he fires the gun, predicting where Manfred’s steps will place him by the time the bullet travels that two-mile distance. This is the pivotal death that sets all other events in motion in the show as MI6 begins to look for a sniper whose skill would make them capable of such a shot.

The Femme Fatale Meets Her Demise
In an effort to track down the Jackal, Bianca Pullman calls on contacts in Northern Ireland who are related to a known special weapons manufacturer that could have made the weapon the Jackal used to pull off Manfred’s assassination.When Alison Stoke is unreceptive, Bianca captures and imprisons her daughter, Emma, in an effort to get her to cooperate. Unfortunately, Emma suffers from a health condition and while in prison, she suddenly dies. Despite this, Bianca conceals this information from her parents until she gets more information.

British Spies Caught In An Ambush
After Bianca gets vital information on Norman Stoke’s whereabouts, she and several other agents go to the location to capture and interrogate Norman.Norman is prepared, however, and he sets traps to kill several agents. Bianca survives, but at least three other agents are killed in the conflict.

Betrayal Leads To A Fatal Outcome
Once Alison and Larry Stoke learn about their daughter’s tragic death, they travel over to the UK to retrieve the body. However, Larry discovers his wife was informing MI6 behind his back about his brother, Norman, the special weapons maker.Larry lashes out, and in a brutal and emotional moment, he beats his wife to death.

The Personal Guard Fails Their Duty
While Bianca is chasing a loose trail of breadcrumbs to find Jackal, the Jackal is trying to collect on the debt owed for killing Manfred Fest.Despite completing the job, the customer did not pay the total owed. Jackal does some digging and discovers the customer was actually Manfred’s son, Elias.He then captures Elias, kills some of his security, and shoots Elias for not paying his dues.
17Delivery Driver & French Police Officer
An Unlikely Pair Witnesses A Crime
After killing Elias, Jackal needs to escape, but in a distracted moment, he bumps into a delivery truck on a road in France. The driver of the truck steps out and hails a police car over to help settle the dispute. While Jackal tries to remain calm and diffuse the tense situation, the police officer chooses to inspect the contents of a bag that contains a handgun, large bundles of cash, and passports.
He then shoots the driver dead, and leaves both men as if there was a violent but brief shootout between the two.

16Norman Stoke
The Patriarch Falls
Norman Stoke was commissioned by the Jackal to create another custom weapon, but after being injured in the raid by MI6 agents, he requires help to build the weapon. Jackal travels to Hungary to meet with Norman, and they work together to create a new piece. However,MI6 shows up at Norman’s workshop, and capture Norman. Jackal was outside the workshop, and when he spotted the agents arriving, he shoots Norman in the head to preserve his identity. A brief but intense firefight between the Jackal and MI6 agents ensues, and the Jackal escapes alive.

Brothers In Arms, United In Death
After escaping from agent Pullman and other MI6 agents, Jackal hides in a barn where he falls asleep. When he wakes up, a strange man stands above him with a shotgun.This is Attila, a farmer, and when he learns that Jackal has money and a weapon, he chooses to detain him and call his brother for help.
