James Gunn and Peter Safran’s newDC Universekicks off with the December release ofCreature Commandos, and the animated series already seems to be performing better than the first release of the former DC Extended Universe, 2013’sMan of Steel. Gunn confirmed thedevelopment ofCreature Commandosin January 2023, with the series set to kick off the rebooted DCU before live-action projects such asSupermanandLanternstake the reins. Early reviews forCreature Commandossuggest the new franchise is starting in a far stronger place than the DCEU.

WhileCreature Commandoswill begin the new DCUwith an animated series featuring a team of misfit monsters, the DCEU kicked off in 2013 by spotlighting perhaps DC’s most iconic hero, Superman. Henry Cavill took center-stage inZack Snyder’sMan of Steel, and the DCEU’s first release established the controversial tone and dark narrative for the entire franchise going forward.Comparing theRotten Tomatoesscores ofMan of SteelandCreature Commandosspells good news for the new DCU, though this, too, could change.

The series' audience score will be determined following the double-premiere on December 5. This is very impressive for the first release in a new superhero franchise, especially when the former DCEU saw a series of disappointing performances towards its end. Of course, the opening of the DCEU wasn’t as impressive, either, asMan of Steel’scritics score onRotten Tomatoessits at 57%, though the audience score is slightly higher with 75%.

It’s likelyCreature Commandos’Rotten Tomatoesscore will change as more critics voice their opinions, though the disparity betweenCreature CommandosandMan of Steelis so large that it’s unlikely the former will drop to the level of the latter. Some may be surprised thatCreature Commandos’score is so much higher thanMan of Steel’s, but this suggests a strong start for the new DCU, which is exactly what the franchise needs.

Why Creature Commandos' RT Score Is Better Than Man Of Steel

Man Of Steel Was A Divisive Superman Movie

AfterCreature Commandosreleases on December 5, it’s very possible the critics score onRotten Tomatoescould decrease. This is especially true as some have already criticized James Gunn’s repetition of his tried-and-true formula, the abbreviated runtime and its similarities to the DCEU. However, it’s very unlikely that the score will drop to 57% to matchMan of Steel.Zack Snyder’s DCEU debut was criticized for lacking humor, being too narratively dark, including poor visual effects and not grasping the essence of Superman from DC Comics, but it seems the DCU will be doing a better job afterCreature Commandos.
