With the many new additions and features inCivilization 7,the inclusion of new units and systems, and the various overhauls to gameplay mechanics, it might be hard to keep track of everything, especially for new players with little experience in the franchise. Migrants are one of the new units inCiv 7that you are guaranteed to come across as you play, but it isn’t exactly obvious how these units are acquired, seeing as they don’t function quite the same way as others. The Migrant can be acquired by completing a range of unique in-game conditions, often tied to Emergent Narratives and Narrative Events.

Migrants are a useful part of the new city growth system that replaces Builder units fromCiv 6and are useful for growing cities. This system focuses on population growth and city development, removing the need to produce or purchase individual Builder units andreducing much of the micromanagementthat occurred in the later stages of previousCivgames. Overall, features ofCiv 7,like the Migrant unit are minor additions that assist you in your campaigns in small ways that accumulate into something more meaningful or impactful for strategy. Here’s a look at how Migrants work inCiv 7.

What Migrants Do In Civilization 7

Migrants Trigger A Growth Event In A Designated City

A Migrant unit spawns in one of your City Centers and is activated to trigger a Growth Event in that city. Growth Events are the system that replaces Builders fromCivilization 6, allowing you to either expand your city by creating a Rural District or add Specialists to Urban Districts to bolster yields and bonuses. Migrants will add a population to the city or town they are activated in,allowingyou to build a Rural District on an unimproved tile. Migrants are acquired in various ways across all three Ages.

Civilization 7’s Overhauled Gameplay Systems Have Some Serious Pros - And Cons

Civilization 7 will overhaul most of the gameplay systems from previous Civ games, which comes with both pros and cons.

Once the conditions are met to trigger a Migrant, it will appear in your Capital city or nearest settlement, depending on how the Migrant is received. For example, four Migrants are awarded for completing the Statue of Liberty Wonder, a Modern Age Wonder unlocked after Mastering Capitalism Civic. These migrants will spawn in the city center of whichever city the Statue of Liberty was built but can be used in any settlement to expand by one population each and create a Rural District. Aside from building the Statue of Liberty Wonder, Migrants are acquired throughNarrative Events inCiv 7, a unique Memento, and other in-game choices.

How To Get Migrants In Civilization 7

Narrative Events Are The Main Source For Migrants

There are various ways to acquire Migrants inCiv 7,with the most prevalent being through Narrative Events. Some Narrative Events that produce Migrants can result fromdispersing hostile Independent Powersor befriending them and converting them to City-States. Others are the result of random Discoveries or Tribal Village awards or can be awarded from the Miasma Crisis Policy in the Antiquity Age. Hundreds of Discoveries are randomized throughout the game, so receiving a Migrant is a roll of the dice from this source. That said, the Statue of Liberty is one of the guaranteed methods for getting migrants, but not the only one.

10 Features In Civ 7 That Will Reduce Micromanagement

These 10 Civilization 7 features will reduce micromanagement, one of the biggest areas of concern from Civ 6 for Firaxis and Civ players alike.

Migrants can also be gained from a specific Memento, called the LanternMemento inCiv 7, which is unlocked after reaching Level 2 with Harriet Tubman. This Memento spawns a Migrant in the capital wheneveryou complete an espionage action without being detected, and like all other Mementos, it can be used by any leader (not just Harriet Tubman) once unlocked. Ultimately, the number of Migrants you receive during any playthrough will be based on luck, aside from the few specific instances mentioned here. Interacting with Independent Powers, building the Statue of Liberty, and using the Lantern Memento are the primary methods of acquiring Migrants inCivilization 7.
