Episode 8 ofDaredevil: Born Againended with a shocking moment, and one theory suggests that it has a deeper meaning tied to another character. TheMCUseries has followed Matt Murdock in his regular life after retiring as Daredevil. The catalyst for this decision was the death of his best friend Foggy Nelson in episode 1. Foggy was a beloved character from the original NetflixDaredevilseries, and fans were excited to hear that he was returning to the screen. Unfortunately,he met a tragic fate whenhe was killed by Bullseyein the opening moments of season 1.

Foggy’s death changed Matt’s life, and he is still living with the grief a year later. He knew that Bullseye was the one to shoot his best friend, but the villain’s motive was always assumed to be vengeance against Matt, Foggy, and Karen. Matt recently figured out that Bullseye was sent by someone, and assuming it was Fisk, he attends the mayor’s gala in an attempt to confront him. However, after listening in on the Fisks’ conversation, Matt realizes thatit was actually Vanessa who orchestrated Foggy’s death. During an already tense confrontation, episode 8 ends with an explosive twist.

In Daredevil: Born Again Episode 8, Matt Murdock Takes A Bullet For Kingpin

Partially due to Matt’s visit, Bullseye is able to break out of prison in episode 8. He then sneaks into the mayor’s gala with the clear intention of shooting someone, though it was a mystery to the viewer until the very moment the bullet was shot. The target is revealed to be Fisk, butMatt ends up jumping in front of the mayor and taking the bullet for him. It’s a shocking moment because of the consistent tension that’s been growing between Matt and Fisk ever sinceDaredevil, but the showrunners have since explained why it makes sense.

Daredevil: Born Againdirectors Aaron Moorhead and Justin Bensonlink Matt’s heroics to the conversation he had with Bullseye in prison. Being a hero sometimes means saving your worst enemy no matter how deep the bad blood runs, and Bullseye challenged Matt on that ideology when he came to visit. Matt could’ve easily just let Fisk take the bullet for himself, and he might’ve wanted to. However, his passion for vigilantism overtook him at that moment, andhe made the quick decision to save a life regardless of who it was.

Based on the directors’ comments, Matt’s episode 8 decision also has ties back to Foggy. He initially retired as Daredevil completely because he felt like he had failed to save Foggy. He couldn’t get to his best friend in time to save his life, and because of that,he didn’t feel worthy of the Daredevil mask anymore. Even after a one-year time skip, the series has shown how Matt still lives with this guilt every day. Now by saving Fisk, he’s able to earn back some of the grace that he felt he lost in episode 1.

Why Daredevil Is Retired In The MCU & What Line Was Crossed

The new Daredevil: Born Again trailer confirms Matt Murdock retired from his vigilante career after a line was crossed (but what happened?)

Matt wanted to feel as ifhe’d earned back the privilege of being Daredevil, which is why he made the quick decision to jump in front of Fisk. He might not have been there in time to save Foggy, but was presented with the opportunity to save another life and he took it. This episode 8 moment truly brings Matt full circle in hisDaredevil: Born Againseason 1 arc just in time for the season finale. By saving Fisk, Matt can hopefully get the closure that he didn’t have after Foggy’s death.
