Isabella Rossellini Plays Nonna In Jurassic World: Chaos Theory Season 3
Nonna Is An Important Supporting Character Even If She Doesn’t Do Much With Dinosaurs
The Academy Award-nominated Isabella Rossellini has a minor but important role inJurassic World: Chaos Theoryseason 3. Introduced early in season 3, Nonna is the grandmother of Ben’s Italian girlfriend Gia. Despite the language and cultural barriers that exist between her and the group that arrives on their doorstep, Nonna allows them to stay in their home. Her distrust of the group is only exasperated by her fear of dinosaurs, prompting the group to try and keep Bumpy’s egg hidden from her.
Nonna gets a predictable but effectively sweet storyline in the season, slowly growing fond of Kenji and finally approving of Ben shortly before they leave. While she’s initially afraid of dinosaurs, Nonna grows attached to the newly hatched Smoothie. She’s shocked when Smoothie wanders off while under her protection and is shaken by Gia and Kenji’s belief that she purposefully abandoned the dinosaur.Nonna even risks her life to save Smoothie, scaring off an advancing predator in the process. It’s a small part of the season but a very sweet one that plays an important tonal role in the show.

Nonna Helps Break Up The Tension That’s Otherwise Driving Season 3
Chaos Theoryhas proven to be a surprisingly intense show, with the main cast barely avoiding death on multiple occasions. This extends to season 3, which grows increasingly dark during Brooklynn’s storyline. It’s good that the show was able to balance those elements with a bit of character-driven levity, which Nonna provides. She gets to be grumpy, the gang gets into some slapstick trying to hide Smoothie from her, and generally bring a more playful energy to a show that has increasingly leaned into thriller elements.

Rossellini’s Nonna also does a good job of bringing out some sweet laughs without distracting from the themes and storyline of the season. Nonna’s home serves as a good safe space for the cast to lean on while focusing on interpersonal conflict. Nonna’s fear of dinosaurs and eventual acceptance of them reflects the wayChaos Theoryhas explored the ways humanity and dinosaurs can coexist. Nonna isn’t the most important character inJurassic World: Chaos Theory, but her role is important in the overall tonal design of the show, and Isabella Rossellini brings a sweet element to the character.
