The Jokerhas always been positioned as the dark opposite to Batman - including with the Joker’s take on a lair. The two are opposite sides of the same coin and DC used to lean more heavily into this, which is why it’s about time that the Joker’s very own version of the Batcave returned. While every comic fan is familiar with the Batcave, not many have seen the Joker’s hilarious version in the Ha-Hacienda.
For a long time, the Ha-Hacienda was theJoker’s iconic answer to the Batcave, and it was in constant use. It’s by no means a new addition tothe Joker’s lore, as it first appeared in 1941’sBatman#4 by Bill Finger, Bob Kane, and George Roussos, thoughit wasn’t properly named until 1975’sThe Joker#1 by Denny O’Neil, Irv Novick, and Dick Giordano.

The Ha-Hacienda is the Joker’s base of operations. There, he keeps trophies of his successful crimes and brings back hostages; he even has a mini-Ha-Hacienda built under his Arkham Asylum cell.
The Joker’s Ha-Hacienda Hideout Has Security That Rivals the Batcave
The Joker’s Silver Age “Batcave” Needs to Make a Return
For whatever reason, the Ha-Hacienda fell out of style. It last appeared in theEmperor Jokerevent twenty-four years ago. Its disappearance is genuinely unfortunate, because it really wasthe perfect base for the Clown Prince of Crime. While setting Joker scenes in abandoned toy factories or carnivals works thematically, it doesn’t really work as well as him having a dedicated base. The Joker moving from an abandoned carnival to an abandoned toy shop isn’t as good as him having a set place with all his tropies and traps.
The Joker’s security systems for the Ha-Hacienda are surprisingly sophisticated, even rivaling those of the Batcave.

The Joker works best when he’s the polar opposite ofBatman.Where Batman has the Batmobileand the Batcave, the Joker should have the Jokermobile and the Ha-Hacienda, making him the perfect rival. At the end of the day, the Joker is a clown, and by having these things he is mocking Batman. Removing some of his gimmicks andmoving him over to generic hideouts takes away a lot of character from the Clown Prince of Crime. It’s not like the Joker’s hideout is just a warehouse with a fancy name either; the Joker’s security systems for the Ha-Hacienda are surprisingly sophisticated, even rivaling those of the Batcave.
The Batcave has some of the most impressive security in the DC Universe. While the Batcave can be entered through the grandfather clock in Wayne Manor, there’s even more security beyond, such as a twisting staircase that either leads to a generic panic room or the Batcave, all depending on who is descending. The Batcave has tons of security systems like this, and the Joker’s Ha-Hacienda isn’t far behind. Not only is the Ha-Hacienda difficult to find, but the Joker has set up various traps to protect it. Originally, he dressed it up as a haunted house, but it also had a security door that only opens to the tune of his unique laughter.

The Joker Has Always Tried to Copy Batman, and His Hideout Is No Different
The Joker’s Gadgets Often Mimic Batman’s
Batman is famous for his gadgets, but the Joker has a few gadgets of his own, too. Not only does the Joker have the Jokermobile and his hand buzzer, but he’s previously copied some of Batman’s gadgets, like the batarangs. Despite this long history of mimicry, including theJoker wearing his own Batsuit on numerous occasions, DC has been shy in returning to the idea of the Ha-Hacienda. It’s not like the idea is too cartoonish for a serial killer clown who uses a flower that sprays acid.
Who is The Joker, Really? The DC Villain’s True Identity Explained
The Joker is one of the most mysterious characters in comic books with multiple backstories, but there is an official identity for the Joker.
DC once returned to the idea of givingthe Joker his own hideoutin the form of what was called the Sanctum of Sanity, but this setting also didn’t last long, as it was partially destroyed in the same issue it debuted. There have been tons of opportunities for DC to bring the Ha-Hacienda back, one of the biggest being in the 2021Jokerongoing series by writer James Tynion IV. In this series, the Joker is on the run and needs a place to lie low, which would’ve been a perfect opportunity to bring his original hideout back. But it continues to stay part of the Joker’s past, makingthe Ha-Hacienda just another obscure part of the Joker’s long history.

The Joker Deserves to Have His Secret Hideout Back
A Great Villain Needs a Great Lair
DC has continually introduced new Joker lore over the past few years. Among these new additions, the Joker now knows who Batman truly is; he was trained by one of the same mentors as Batman; and he was created by a being from another universe. The idea that the Ha-Hacienda would be too absurd or childish for the Joker is ridiculous. Despitethe Jokerbeing modeled after a clown, it seems that Batman is the only one who gets to keep his cool toys and hideout.
The Joker
The Joker is a psychopathic criminal mastermind with a warped sense of humor. Initially introduced as a remorseless serial killer, the character evolved over time, often oscillating between a prankster and a homicidal maniac. His relationship with Batman is one of the most complex in comic book history, defined by their mutual obsession. Over the decades, the Joker has become an enduring icon of chaos and madness, embodying the antithesis of Batman’s order and justice.
