In 1954, an experiment with a mysterious energy source called Kai-Sei awakened Godzilla and other terrifying kaiju. For decades, humanity has endured an onslaught of monster attacks. While Japan views these unstoppable rampages like natural disasters, the United States’ G-Force is attempting to fight these seemingly immortal titans. Now, they’ve found a boy who wields the power of Godzilla. Will he save the world… or bring about its doom?

The second isGodzilla: Escape the Deadzoneby Ethan Parker, Griffin Sheridan, and Pablo Tunica. The third title is perhaps the biggest standout, as it willtakeGodzillafans where the franchise never has taken them before: space!Starship Godzillaby Chris Gooch and Oliver Ono will follow a gang of misfits flying around space in a suited-up version of Mechagodzilla. And the coolest part? They’ll be visiting the planets ofalien species that have visited Earth in pastGodzillastories.

Why Is Godzilla’s New Continuity Called the “Kai-Sei Era”?

The Mysterious New Kaiju-Substance in Godzilla Canon, Explained

The new titles inGodzilla’s upcoming comic book relaunch should make fans very excited about the future of the franchise. While the likes of human/kaiju-mutants, a superpowered anti-Godzilla task force, and literal space travel inside Mechagodzilla are obvious standouts, there’s also the matter of the name of this new chapter itself: “Kai-Sei Era”. What does that mean?

Well, Kai-Sei is the name of the mysterious energy source that humans were experimenting with - the same energy source that awakened Godzilla. Kai-Sei is teased to have ties to outer space, as if its origin is extraterrestrial. While it’s unclear what that means about the nature of the kaiju - Godzilla included - or why it awakened them, it is clear that this new ‘kaiju substance’ will play a key role across all threeGodzillatitles. Hence, the “Kai-Sei Era” ofGodzillacanon.

Godzilla’s New Era is Great for New Fans, but Even Better for Old Ones

While this upcoming new era ofGodzillacontinuity is the perfect jumping-on point for new fans, as it will completely rewrite Godzilla’s entire story going all the way back to his first appearance, it’s arguably even better for old fans - especially inStarship Godzilla. ThroughoutGodzillacanon, aliens have visited Earth. Sometimes they’re benevolent, other times they’re villainous and want nothing more than to take over, with only Godzilla being strong enough to stop them. Now, inStarship Godzilla, humanity can take the fight to the aliens on their home planets, and that will be awesome to see.

It’s Official: Godzilla Brings Baby Mothra to Life After All These Years

Mothra is coming back to life after being dead for many years within Godzilla continuity, but she isn’t just coming back, she’s coming back as a baby.

Of course,Starship Godzillaisn’t the only title fans should be excited about. Sure, it is takingGodzillafans to other planets for the first time in the franchise’s history (inside Mechagodzilla to boot), and while that is epic,Starship Godzillais just one of the three new chapters inGodzilla’s all-new canon - and fans new and old should be very excited about each one.
