J.J. Abrams’Supermanmovie gets an update ahead of theDC Universeinstallment in 2025 thanks to a report about the creator’s deal with Warner Bros. One of the filmmakers who has had an overall deal with Warner Bros. Discovery for a number of years now is Abrams, as he was also set to run a handful of DC properties for the studio. However, withJames Gunn’s DC Universenow underway as the main priority for DC Studios, Abrams' future with the superhero brand has been left a mystery.
In a new report fromVariety, J.J. Abrams' future with Warner Bros. Discovery was addressed, as his"team has quietly closed a more modest production pact with the studio that sources say will cover film and TV,“which also included an update on hisSupermanmovie. While the script was written by Ta-Nehisi Coates, set to focus on a Black Superman, the trade notes that the"project is technically still alive but has seen no forward movement since early 2023.“At the time of this story’s publication, Abrams, Bad Robot, Warner Bros. Discovery, and DC Studios have not commented on this report.

What The J.J. Abrams Updates Mean For The DCU & His Superman Movie
Ever since its initial announcement, there have been very fewupdates on the BlackSupermanmovieother than that they are continuing to develop it,even after the launch of DC Studios, which came with the decision to do the DC Universe reboot. Despite no actors being eyed for the role while a director has yet to be hired, Abrams and Coates' project could be something that Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios want to invest in, but for some time in the distant future.
Even thoughCreature Commandosbegan the DC Universe this month, the proper start to the franchise will be with 2025’sSupermanmovie, which will set the foundation for the whole franchise. While Gunn has made it clear that the Elseworlds brand will have a place at DC Studios,Matt Reeves’The Batmanuniverse is the only other cinematic DC franchise that they have going that is set outside the DC Universe continuity.

Coates and Abrams’BlackSupermanmoviewould easily fall into the Elseworlds concept, but perhaps once Gunn’s DC Universe has gotten a bit further into its run. Having twoSupermanreboots this close to one another would most likely not be something that DC Studios wants to invest in, especially as they have other DC movies that are gearing up for filming in the foreseeable future.
Our Take On The J.J. Abrams Report
While time will tell if the BlackSupermanreboot is actually happening, it would definitely be a fascinating film to explore as part of DC Studios' Elseworlds umbrella. Even if it ends up being a one-and-done, this would be a very differentSupermanmovie, especially if they are either having a Black actor play Clark Kent or using someone like Val-Zod or Calvin Ellis for the titular lead. But for now, the world will have to wait and see what becomes of J.J. Abrams’Supermanfilm following these new updates.
