After nearly a decade away, Alex Cabot could return toLaw & Order: Special Victims Unit. The show, which has been running continuously since 1999, is currently in its 26th season, andnewLaw & Order: SVUepisodes continue to airregularly. The current cast includes Mariska Hargitay (Captain Olivia Benson), Ice-T (Sergeant Fin), Peter Scanavino (ADA Carisi), and more major stars. Unfortunately, it has also lost significant figures over the years, including Demore Barnes (Christian Garland), Michelle Hurd (Monique Jeffries), and Christopher Meloni (Elliott Stabler). Some have returned, but many remain uninvolved with the series.
In an interview withPeople, Stephanie March expressed some interest in returning to the show. During her tenure on the series, March played Alex Cabot, the Assistant District Attorney and Homicide Bureau Chief who debuted in 2000 and continually made on-and-off appearances on the show until 2018.March explained that she would return toLaw & Order, but she believes that there would need to be a “write-in campaign” and a good story to facilitate her full return. She expressed that she would “never say never” about a potential reintroduction. Check out her quote below:
I guess if people still write, you could do a write-in campaign, that would be my only suggestion. The good news is, I get to see Chris [Meloni] and Mariska [Hargitay] and BD [Wong] and all of those other wonderful people with regularity, so that’s good.I think it would depend on the story, but they’ve got some good writers. Never say never, right?
What This Means For Alex Cabot’s Return
Cabot Has Not Appeared In Nearly A Decade
This marks a major sign of the potential for Alex Cabot’s return toSVUafter nearly 10 years away from the show. She had previously exited the series whenher character entered the Witness Protection Programaround season 5, before subsequently returning in later seasons. Her exit was reportedly due to March wanting to explore other roles, rather than being defined by Cabot throughout her career. She later appeared in several scattered appearances before officially concluding her arc, as Cabot sought to join the International Criminal Court.
March once led aLaw and Orderspin-off, 2006’sConviction.
Given that March has repeatedly returned to the series, it should come as no surprise that she admits the potential for a return even asCarisi (Peter Scanavino) may be preparing to leave. March has taken opportunities and roles outside theLaw & Orderuniverse, including inOrigin,Naomi, andHarlan Coben’s Shelter. With her creative needs satisfied, a return toSVUcould allow her to explore more about Cabot’s character that the show has not yet been able to reveal. If a write-in campaign is strong enough,a return is now possible.

Returns And Cameos Are Always Fun
The most interesting element oftheLaw & Orderuniverseis thatcrossovers, cameos, and reintroductions happen fairly regularly. A character leaving the show does not mean that they are gone forever, as this is a living and breathing world that embraces returns by major characters. Cabot was undoubtedly an essential part ofLaw & Order: SVUin its early years, so it would be rewarding to see her return in the 2020s. Even if it takes a write-in campaign to get it, a reappearance by March’s Alex Cabot would be an extraordinary development.
