Star Warsshocked viewers when theAhsokashow revealed thatSabine Wrenhad becomeAhsoka Tano’sJedi Padawan followingStar Wars Rebels, in part because Sabine never seemed Force-sensitive, butthe most confusing aspect of this revelation was the timeline.Ahsoka’sStar Warstimelineis relatively well-defined, especially as shows likeStar Wars: Tales of the JediandThe Mandalorianhave continued to flesh out her story long afterStar Wars: The Clone Wars. However,Ahsoka’s whereabouts during the originalStar Warstrilogyremain relatively unknown.

This adds to the confusion about when Ahsoka could have trained Sabine, particularly because ofStar Wars’recent retcon regardingwhen the Purge of Mandalore happened. Earlier this year, the canon video gameStar Wars Outlawsconfirmed that the Purge of Mandalore happened a year before the Battle of Endor, in 3 ABY. Not only did this alter Huyang’s account of the Purge inAhsoka, but it also meant Ahsoka was training Sabine throughout the original trilogy. Unfortunately,Star Warshas changed that somewhat straightforward timeline yet again, making it confusing once more.

The Ahsoka Show Implied Sabine Blamed Ahsoka For Not Listening About Mandalore

Evidently, Ahsoka Failed To Heed Sabine’s Warning

InAhsoka, Baylan Skoll referenced Sabine Wren losing her friends and family because her former Jedi Master didn’t trust her. This implies that Sabine anticipated an attack on Mandalore, made Ahsoka aware in some way, and was ignored. Of course, Baylan Skoll is a dark side Force-user, which means he’s not above manipulation; he may be pushing the narrative that the Purge of Mandalore was Ahsoka’s fault because it makes Sabine more likely to abandon her former Master and work alongside him and Shin Hati.

This marked the end of Sabine’s time training as Ahsoka’s Jedi Padawan.

Huyang talks about Mandalore Purge in Ahsoka

It’s clear that Baylan’s comments had the desired effect on Sabine, and while that alone doesn’t confirm that Ahsoka ignored Sabine’s warning, it suggests that Sabine does blame her for the Purge. Baylan was preying upon a resentment Sabine already carried. Whether it was truly Ahsoka’s fault or not, though, this marked the end of Sabine’s time training as Ahsoka’s Jedi Padawan. This is why the update to the Purge of Mandalore timeline inOutlawsis so significant; theoretically, it reveals the exact period in which Ahsoka trained Sabine.

Star Wars Has Gradually Figured Out When The Purge Happened

The Timing Of The Purge Of Mandalore Has Changed Multiple Times

InAhsokaepisode 8, Huyang said the Purge of Mandalore happened toward the end of the Galactic Civil War, after the Battle of Endor. This would mean the Purge happened in 4 ABY, a 1-year discrepancy from the date given more recently inOutlaws. Although a 1-year difference may seem minimal, it has major implications for Ahsoka’s story and fortheStar Warstimeline.

Because the Mandalorians sat out the Galactic Civil War, at least as far as was shown in the original trilogy, the timing of the Purge of Mandalore can help explain their absence, thereby filling a major plot hole. If the Purge happened after the war, though, this is once again called into question. Now, it seemsStar Warshas done exactly that—again—based on a brand-newStar Warsbook’s description of Sabine Wren’s training with Ahsoka Tano.

Star Wars' Mandalorian Timeline & History Explained

As the greatest warriors in the Star Wars galaxy, Mandalorians have a rich and expanding history, and this is their full timeline in canon explained.

Sabine’s Training Apparently Happened AFTER The Galactic Civil War

A New Star Wars Book Has Made This Timeline Confusing…Again

After it seemedStar Warshad firmly established that the Purge of Mandalore had taken place in 3 ABY, at which point Sabine and Ahsoka had ended their training,a newStar Warsbook bewilderingly suggests Sabine wasn’t trained as a Jedi until after the Galactic Civil War. InStar Wars Encyclopedia: The Comprehensive Guide to the Star Wars Galaxy, written by Dan Brooks, Megan Crouse, Amy Richau, Amy Ratcliffe, Brandon Wainerdi, Dan Zehr, and Kelly Knox, it states:

“After the Galactic Civil War, Ahsoka and Sabine set off to find Ezra. The Empire doesn’t retaliate and Lothal’s citizens return to peaceful lives. For a time, Sabine trains as a Jedi under Ahsoka Tano but believing she has failed, she returns to a quiet life on Lothal with her Loth-cat Murley.”

This throws into question when Ahsoka and Sabine trained together and perhaps even the timing of the Purge of Mandalore once again.

This also means thatthe Mandalorians aren’t the only ones who were mysteriously missing from the war. With the previous timeline, it made sense that Ahsoka wasn’t in the original trilogy because she was presumably training Sabine, at least up untilReturn of the Jedi. If Sabine wasn’t training throughoutA New HopeandThe Empire Strikes Back, this once again begs the question: where was Ahsoka when the galaxy needed her?

In the franchise, Ahsoka is absent from those movies because she hadn’t yet been created.Star Warsnevertheless needs an in-universe explanation for why Ahsoka didn’t participate in the war, especially afterRebelsrevealed that she did have an established history with the Rebellion. Hopefully,Star Warswill soon address the precise timing of the Purge of Mandalore, the whereabouts of Ahsoka during the original trilogy, and the exact timeline ofAhsoka Tanoand Sabine Wren’s Jedi training.
