It’s official:All You Need Is Kill, the original story behind Tom Cruise’sEdge of Tomorrow, is finally getting an anime.Edge of Tomorrowwas a cult action film from the 2010s that, surprisingly, was one of the better adaptations of a Japanese property thanks to Cruise’s performance and its great handling of the source material, and it still holds up well a decade after the fact.

WhileEdge of Tomorrowwas a great film, itwasn’t a big hit at the box office, and it’s largely been dead as a franchise. In a surprise announcement, however,All You Need Is Kill, the original novelEdge of Tomorrowwas based on, has been announced to be receiving an anime film adaptation from Studio 4°C ofBerserk: The Golden Age Arcfame. At the moment, it’s unknown what, exactly, the anime will be about, but with how greatEdge of Tomorrowand the originalAll You Need Is Killare, having more from the franchise is nonetheless great.

What To Expect From The All You Need Is Kill Anime

Everything To Know About All You Need Is Kill’s Anime

As is often the case with live-action adaptations of anime and other Japanese properties,Edge of Tomorrow, while still followingAll You Need Is Kill’s basic story, was very different from the novel, as it not only followed a different protagonist, but it changed the story to give it a conclusive and happy ending as opposed to the novel’s bittersweet and open ending. No one should go intoAll You Need Is Killexpecting to see what they saw inEdge of Tomorrow, and as beloved as that movie was, that’s ultimately the right move to help it stand out.

Interestingly, there’s a chance that even those who read the novel or manga adaptation might be lost. The protagonist in the trailer and key visual is clearly not Keiji Kiriya, and while they bear some resemblance to Rita Vrataski as she was depicted in the manga, it’s still not clear if they’re Rita or a new character, entirely. Whatever the case,All You Need Is Kill’s trailer makes it clear that it will be different from bothEdge of Tomorrowand the original story, and that could make it plenty of fun to watch for old and new fans alike.

Much of that high quality can be attributed to the staff behind it.
