I am a hugeAnimal Crossingfan, so whenAnimal Crossing: Pocket Campfirst came out, I wanted to like it. Despite my best efforts, though, I just couldn’t get into it. This was partially because I had an old phone at the time and all the loading took forever, and partially because I was still playingNew Horizonsback then and I didn’t need anotherAnimal Crossinggame.

Now thatPocket Camp Completehas come out, though, I’ve found myself actually getting sucked back into the game to fill the missing void left behind when I stopped playingNew Horizons. I’m not surprised that I’m lovingPocket Camp. It’s adorable and charming, and it has every character from all the otherAnimal Crossingtitles.

Animal Crossing Pocket Camp custom designs

What Iamsurprised about is that I’ve discovered three brand new characters I didn’t even know existed that I would have absolutely missed if I had never picked upAnimal Crossing: Pocket Camp Complete.I’m talking, of course, about the hilarious OK Motors birds.

Pocket World Complete Is A Gathering Place For Existing Special Characters

Some Familiar Faces Make An Appearance

Before I even met the trio behind Ok Motors, I was greeted by some faces that I know very well. Isabelle is one of my favorite characters in any game, ever, so I was glad to see her friendly face when I booted up the app. While she doesn’t play a huge role inPocket Campbeyond introducing me to the area, I know she’s always close enough to stop by and say hello.

Besides the special characters, there areover 400 villagers to find and invite back to the campsite. That’s all the villagers that were ever introduced, from every game in theAnimal Crossinggame. For anAnimal Crossingveteran, seeing all these familiar faces in one place was incredibly nostalgic. And, with so many existing characters present and accounted for, I wasn’t expecting there to be any new characters introduced inPocket Camp. And then I went to upgrade my camper and got a wonderful surprise.

I Didn’t Expect To Find Brand New Characters To Fall In Love With In Pocket World

The OK Motor Birds Manage To Be A Fresh Addition To The AC World

OK Motors is the car shop whereAC: Pocket Campplayers go to upgrade their campers. The trio consists ofthe older Carlo, the youngster Beppe, and the boss running the whole operation, Giovanni. From the moment I met them, they won me over completely. The three definitely operate as a team but each one is distinct and recognizable.

According to the elder Carlo, theOK Motors shop is a family-run establishment that’s been passed down through several generations.Carlo has worked there since he was “younger than you,” though Giovanni runs the place today despite not being the oldest. Although Carlo is getting up there in age, his mind is sharp and his car skills have been honed over years of practice. He has a patch of gray just beneath his chin that looks like a white beard, making it clear that this is the oldest and wisest member of the team.

Beppe is the youngest of the three OK Motor birds. He’s lanky anda little awkward but incredibly enthusiastic about his job. He’s the artist of the bunch and all the cool car designs and paint jobs available for the camper were created by him. He’s both very proud of his work, calling his designs “so cool,” and yet still fairly humble, playing down his expertise. Beppe is shown to be a little naive and green around the ears (though not, of course, literally) and his lines tend to be the funniest.

And then there’s Giovanni, the boss and the head of the whole team. All transactions related to the camper go through him. Giovanni has a round head and perpetually concerned eyebrows, making him incredibly endearing. He has some very strong “dad” energy, calling my character “slugger” and “pal,“and I can’t help but picture him speaking with an Italian-Brooklyn accent.

Separately, they’re delightful, buttogether they’re even better.I haven’t spent much time decorating my camper yet but I’ve already upgraded it twice, just to see the silly shenanigans the three get up to every time I upgrade. Theynever fail to make me gigglewith their little heads bobbing around and their banter.

I’m Amazed That Every Character In Animal Crossing Is So Different

Many Years And Hundreds Of Characters Later, Animal Crossing Still Delivers

In recent years, I’ve seen an increasing number of discussions about whetherAnimal Crossinghas lost touch with its focus on the villagers. I’ve read forum posts by many players disillusioned with the increasing focus on decorating and the shift away frommemorable character interactions.Having met the newest members of theAnimal Crossingfamily, Beppe, Carlo, and Giovanni, I disagree with the sentiment.

Sure, the lines of dialogue when interacting with villagers inPocket Campbegin to repeat after a while, but that’s expected in a game with over 400 unique characters with daily conversation options. Despite this, the villagers and special characters of the series continue to feel fresh and new, and every bit as charming as when I first found this title.

I’m sure part of this is because Istarted playingAnimal Crossing: Pocket Camprecently, only after it was re-released as a paid app instead of a constantly updating one. With an app that was consistently getting new content, it might have felt unfair to get villagers who often repeated the lines of other characters already in the game. But for me,Pocket Camphas been a wonderful reminder of how charming and endearing the villagers can be.

I hope that, whatever theAnimal Crossingdevelopment team is working on next, they manage to bring even more of the diverse and delightful personalities of previous games. I also hope that wherever the series goes next it brings the OK Motor trio, Beppe, Carlo, and Giovanni along for the ride. It would be a shame if these wonderful new characters were left behind in theAnimal Crossing: Pocket Camp Completeworld.
