The first season of Nathan Fielder’sThe Rehearsalwent off in its own direction, but now that season 2 is confirmed to be happening, it can finally realize the show’s juicy original premise. Much like Fielder’s other series,Nathan for YouandThe Curse,The Rehearsalis a totally unique TV experimentthat’s unlike any other show on the air. It’s a documentary series that blurs the line between fiction and reality as it constructs convoluted fantasies to force participants to face their very real problems.

The Rehearsalseason 1started out witha fascinating conceit of using elaborate setups to prepare people for difficult situations. But season 1 quickly deviated from that premise and became a full-time parenting simulation.HBO renewedThe Rehearsalfor a second seasonway back in 2022 after season 1 aired.A recent HBO promo confirmed thatThe Rehearsalseason 2 will finally arrive in 2025, so it can finally go back to the show’s original premise and realize its full potential.

The Rehearsal Season 2 Can Realize The Show’s Original Premise

The Rehearsal Was Originally About Using Elaborate Setups To Prepare People For Difficult Situations

The first episode ofThe Rehearsalintroduced the show’s concept of preparing people to face life’s challenges with a profoundly mundane subject. A man who lied about his education to his bar trivia team had to finally come clean. Fielder and his team built a replica bar to scale, hired an actor to shadow the man’s friend and imitate her, and ran through every possible outcome of his confession. It was a unique concept and it made for compelling television.

The Rehearsalseason 2 was confirmed in HBO’s 2025 promo alongside a first look atThe White Lotusseason 3.

In its second episode,The Rehearsalset up a new simulation:a young woman moved into a house with a bunch of child actors working in shifts so that she could prepare for the challenges of motherhood. But this scenario ended up derailing the show.

Fielder came aboard as the father, the mother abandoned the project, and the parenting storyline dragged out for the rest of the season. The only other rehearsal storyline went unresolved and the acting class storyline felt out of place. With its second season,The Rehearsalcan finally go back to its brilliant original premise.

Why The Rehearsal Season 1 Abandoned Its Initial Premise

Once The Parenting Scenario Was Established, It Morphed Into Something Else Entirely

The best documentaries follow the story that’s presented to them, rather than trying to manufacture a narrative. That’s what Fielder did withThe Rehearsalseason 1. Once the parenting scenario was established, the project evolved into a different beast entirely. As one of the child actors became attached to Fielder as a father figure,The Rehearsalbecame a study in how children struggle to separate make-believe from reality. It was just as interesting as the show’s original premise, but it wasn’t the original premise.
