Robert Eggers’Nosferatumade a couple of changes to the original movie and the main character, Count Orlok, and it ended up sharing a disturbing power with Bill Skarsgård’s forgotten Netflix vampire. One of 2024’s most anticipated horror movies was Robert Eggers’Nosferatu, a remake of the 1922 German expressionist classic of the same name by F. W. Murnau, itself an unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’sDracula.Nosferatuhas been praised by critics and, at the time of writing, has already broken even at the box office, and it’s expected to make more.

Nosferatutakes the audience back to 1838 to meet Ellen Hutter (Lily-Rose Depp), a young woman married to Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult), a solicitor and estate agent. Ellen has been haunted by a mysterious creature for years, and when Thomas travels to Transylvania for work, he meets the creature himself: vampire Count Orlok (Skarsgård). Orlok is infatuated with Ellen and won’t stop until she’s his, unleashing horror around Ellen and Thomas.Count Orlok has a couple of special powers, and one of them is the same that Skargård’s forgotten Netflix vampire had.

Count Orlok & Roman Godfrey Fixate On Lonely Women Through Their Powers

Same Power, Different Vampires

Count Orlok is like most vampires when it comes to the most basic and well-known traits of these creatures: he’s near immortal, he feeds on blood (human blood, mostly), he sleeps in a coffin, and can be killed with a stake through the heart or if he’s exposed to sunlight. However, Eggers’ version ofNosferatualso granted Orlok some extra powers that are pretty dark and disturbing, and he used one of those on Ellen.

10 Ways Nosferatu 2024 Is Different From The Original Film

Robert Eggers' remake of the iconic vampire classic makes several clever changes to the story of the original 1922 movie starring Max Schreck.

When Orlok begins to hunt Ellen again, she comes clean to Thomas and confesses that, when she was younger, she prayed for something to ease her loneliness and ended up summoning Orlok. The vampire wasn’t pleased when he learned of Ellen’s marriage and claimed Ellen as his, thus unleashing his plan to get rid of Thomas and leave Ellen without her loved ones. Orlok appearing to Ellen in dreams and haunting her is very much like what Skarsgård’s Roman Godfrey did in Netflix’sHemlock GroveTV series.

Roman is an upir, which is a type of vampire, though he doesn’t know until the end of season 1.

Hemlock Grovetakes viewers to the title town to follow Peter Rumancek (Landon Liboiron), a Romani teenager who moves to town with his mother and is revealed to be a werewolf, and Roman Godfrey, the teenage heir of the town’s wealthiest family. Roman is an upir, which is a type of vampire, though he doesn’t know until the end of season 1. Throughout the first season, Roman is often under the mind control of his mother, Olivia (Famke Janssen), also an upir.

At the beginning ofHemlock Grove, Roman’s cousin (who is actually his half-sister), Letha (Penelope Mitchell), learns that she’s pregnant, but claims that she was impregnated by an angel. Letha remembers being visited by an angel, but at the end of season 1, it’s revealed that the angel was Roman, and Letha’s mind created the image of an angel to cope with the trauma.

Like Orlok, Roman appeared to Letha in dreams, and he also had a strong connection with her that was borderline problematic given that they were related.

Like Ellen,Letha was also lonely, but she didn’t consciously summon company – instead, company was forced onto herby Olivia, the mastermind behind it all. Like Orlok, Roman appeared to Letha in dreams, and he also had a strong connection with her that was borderline problematic given that they were related.

Surprisingly, Count Orlok Is Less Disturbing Than Roman Godfrey

Yes, Roman Godfrey Was Even Worse

Count Orlok is absolutely terrifying inNosferatuand the above-mentioned power makes him even scarier, but Roman Godfrey is actually worse. Roman used his powers to mesmerize people, get into their minds, and get them to do as he pleased without knowing he had these abilities, but once he became aware of them, he became a lot worse. Not only did Roman impregnate his cousin/half-sister under Olivia’s manipulation, butin season 3 she also set him up to have sex with his other half-sister.

Even after learning they were related, Roman continued to see his half-sister, and he became more ruthless and reckless.Count Orlok is physically menacing, while Roman Godfrey looks like a normal, human young man but is a lot more monstrous than Orlok himself – however, Orlok’s story inNosferatuis a lot better written and developed than Roman’s in three seasons ofHemlock Grove.
