This article contains spoilers for On Call season 1.

On Callstars Troian Bellisario and Brandon Larracuente break down where Harmon and Diaz stand after the events of season 1. A police drama executive produced byLaw & Ordercreator Dick Wolf,On Callpremiered on Prime Video in early January. The story centers on the rookie Alex Diaz (Larracuente)and the veteran officer Traci Harmon (Bellisario) as they patrol Long Beach, California. The eight episodes use bodycam, dash camera, and cellphone footage to visualize the experience, with Lori Loughlin, Rich Ting, and Eriq LaSalle also part of theOn Callcast.

In an interview withTVLine, Larracuente reacts to Harmon recommending that Diaz restart his probation. Diaz views this as a betrayal, lashing out at Harmon, but Larracuente says that his charactercomes around to accepting that his partner only wants the best for him. Bellisaro echoes the sense of love that Harmon feels for Diaz, though she acknowledges thatHarmon also feels betrayed after being denied a promotion. Read their quotes below:

Lori Loughlin as Lt. Bishop and Troian Bellisario as Officer Harmon in On Call

Larracuente: “I think it’s something that Diaz wrestles with before he steps back into that vehicle at the end of episode 8. Do I get back into this vehicle with somebody who just sent me back to Day 1? Can I ever trust her again? The fact that he decides to get back in is only because he [realizes] that it’s all based on a real deep love and protection for him. She just wants what is best for him, and she doesn’t want [their trainer-trainee relationship] to end.”

Bellisario: “When you’re in a relationship with somebody, and you tell them something they won’t like to hear but you know it’s for their own good, that is a means of loving somebody. Sure, if I do this, if I send you back to Day 1, I have to also accept that you’re going to be mad at me. You’re going to be pissed.”

“Harmon feels betrayed [by Bishop]. She’s, like, I trusted you. You told me I could tell you that I went off book. And she’s like, yeah, well, I didn’t fire you, but you trusted me and you have to be smarter. It’s a revelation for Harmon as well to say, wow, I’ve got more to learn. I made sacrifices to get justice for Delgado that actually have consequences.”

What The On Call Ending Means For Harmon & Diaz

It’s A Tough Finale

The ending ofOn Callisn’t great for either the rookie or the veteran. Just as Bellisario mentions, Harmon loses out on a chance to join the drug team led by Sergeant Koyama. Her hopes are squashed by Lieutenant Bishop whocites Harmon’s disobedience. In a similar vein, Harmon feels Diaz is reckless and alltoo willing to march to the beat of his own drumto dangerous results.

On Call: Lieutenant Bishop’s Decision On Officer Harmon’s Future Explained

Lieutenant Bishop makes a surprising decision towards the end of Amazon’s On Call, which significantly impacts the future of Harmon’s police career.

They mirror each other despite Diaz’s anger and Harmon’s frustration. Considering that executive producers Elliot Wolf and Tim Walsh are hopeful aboutOn Callseason 2, those sentiments may well be revisited and expanded on. In all likelihood, even though Diaz and Harmon will get their wishes, it’s not likely to happen in the immediate future because of how television generally works.

Our Take On The Ending Of On Call

It Resets The Main Duo

Part of the trick of television, particularly the procedurals thatOn Callowes a lot to, is that you need to change and evolve the story enough while still keeping the premise and main characters generally tied to the core conceit. The season 1 ending manages to do that for both Harmon and Diaz, essentially maintaining a tricky balance. But if the series lasts long enough, there will be more room to take bigger swings.
