Silostars Remmie Milner and Shane McRae tease their characters' arcs in season 2.Milner plays Shirley Campbell and McRae plays Knox, with both characters being fellow engineers and friends of Juliette Nichols(Rebecca Ferguson), who lived and worked alongside her in the mechanical level of the Silo. After Juliette left the Silo and refused to clean, a spark of rebellion has been lit and will continue to ignite as the masses rise up against authority inSilo season 2’s story.

While speaking withScreen Rant,Milner and McRae hint at how their characters are continuing the revolution Juliette started. In season 1, Juliette was referred to as the Last Flamekeeper, a reference to an organized group that searched for truth about the outside world and rebelled against the Silo’s authority more than a century earlier. Milner and McRae discuss how Shirley and Knox can also be considered Flamekeepers in season 2. Check out their comments below:

Milner: I would love to consider Shirley as a Flamekeeper. Aren’t they brilliant? Completely outspoken, and just this super strong network that is kind of in the undercurrent of what is going on in the Silo, in terms of the rebellion.

It’s so hard to speak without giving stuff away. There’s so much in every single episode, and there’s 10 whole episodes.

Rebecca Ferguson as Juliette, looking shocked, in Silo season 2

McRae: I think part of Knox’s journey is becoming a Flamekeeper. I don’t think he necessarily starts out that way. I think he believes that he can work within the system, and he’s grown up trying to do the right thing, trying to do the right thing… And what’s right is what’s been told and what he’s been taught. He sort of finds his inner flame at specific moments during the season until it’s a raging fire.

Specifically in the rebellion, I think there’s a journey to it. I think we start out with one intention, and there are specific moments that I can’t give away where everything flips, the characters become messier, and it all goes kind of crazy. And for Knox, when he and Shirley come out of that time — it’s so hard to talk in code without giving anything away — when they come through that fire, they’re changed, and they no longer even have to be secretive about keeping the flame. It’s all in the open, and that’s what part of what the rebellion is, right?

What This Means For Silo Season 2

Shirley & Knox Will Have More Prominent Roles

In Juliette’s absence, Shirley, Knox, and otherSilocharactersneed to step up and ensure that the fire she created is not snuffed out. Many of Juliette’s allies were killed in season 1, but Shirley and Knox are two longtime friends and colleagues who believe in Juliette and areemboldened by her refusal to clean and her defiance of authority. Despite the engineers being the ones who keep the Silo’s generator running, they are looked down upon by many within the Silo.

The World Of Silo Explained

The 2023 Apple TV+ series is based on a trilogy of books that collectively outline all the background information explaining how the silo came to be.

This will make it all the more satisfying to see Shirley and Knox rallying the engineers and leading the charge against Bernard Holland (Tim Robbins), Robert Sims (Common), and their allies. With Juliette gone and the revolution escalating,Shirley and Knox will play larger roles in season 2. Even though Knox is the head of the mechanical level, McRae’s comments indicate that he will have to adjust to the idea of becoming one ofSilo’s Flamekeepers, while it comes more naturally to Shirley.

Our Take On Remmie Milner and Shane McRae’s Comments

The Engineers Will Be Vital To Season 2’s Story

Between their connection to Juliette and being the faces of the Silo’s working class,Shirley and Knox are the perfect individuals to be at the forefront of the rebellion. The engineers are already an incredibly resourceful team and a tightly-knit community who make survival in the Silo possible. Bernard, Sims, and their allies will quickly learn the mistake of deceiving and looking down on the engineers, as Juliette was only the first of numerous Flamekeepers who will now expose the truth inSiloseason 2.
