Star Warshas been consistent with depicting Jedi and their lightsabers during the Clone Wars in a very specific way – until now. Lightsabers have always been one of the core elements of a Jedi’s identity, and from a fan’s point of view, is absolutely essential. But there have also always been unspoken rules surrounding howJedi lightsabersshould be portrayed.
Single-bladed sabers are the most common kind, withother subtle lightsaber typeslike curved-hilt sabers and hinged lightsabers being much less common, but still seen wielded by Jedi occasionally. Count Dooku and Pong Krell both had unique lightsabers as Jedi during the Clone Wars era, but both fall to the dark side, linking these divergent forms of saber with those inclined to the dark. While this is not a canon rule, it makes even more sense when considering a much more important, incredibly consistent symbol of darkness never wielded by a human Jedi during this era: the double-bladed lightsaber.

The Clone Wars Treated Double-Bladed Lightsabers As A Traditional Sith Weapon
A Weapon Wielded By Almost No Jedi
While eras such as the Old andHigh Republichave seen Jedi of the Republic like Keeve Trennis, Orla Jareni, and Satele Shan wielding double-bladed lightsabers, this seems to have fallen out of fashion. In fact, in canon, there are barely any Jedi beyond the High Republic that have been seen with this type of weapon. Instead, it has been almost completely reserved for those on the dark side and affiliated with the Sith. George Lucas seemed to believe this, and so did many otherStar Warscreatives, as the double-bladed lightsaber’s first appearance was wielded by theSith Lord Exar KuninLegends.
Orla Jareni and Keeve Trennis wield hinged and split double-bladed lightsabers respectively, so even then, not truly double-bladed single sabers.

The only exception to this association with the dark side seen in canon so far has been bokken Jedi Cal Kestis and his former master, Jaro Tapal, of theJediseries of games. Given Lasat ageing is unknown, it’s entirely possible Tapal was in fact a High Republic Jedi, and his apprentice followed in his footsteps when Cal reforged a double-bladed lightsaber. Besides Tapal, no Jedi during the Clone Wars has been shown to have a double-bladed lightsaber, until now.
Which Star Wars character has the coolest lightsaber?
The lightsaber is one of the most easily recognized sci-fi weapons of all cinematic history, “an elegant weapon for a more civilized age.” While I love Mace Windu’s lightsaber with its purple blade and silver-and-gold hilt, I also love the curved hilt used by Count Dooku. Kanan Jarrus also has a unique lightsaber hilt design that I also really like.
Star Wars Has Introduced A Mystery New Jedi… With A Double-Bladed Lightsaber
During Order 66 On The Planet Zondula
Rodney Barnes and Ramon Rosanas’Inquisitors#4 takes readers to the distant planet Zondula, where aremote Jedi Templeis attacked by 501st clone troopers during Order 66. Among the Jedi ranks present is a human female, with red face-markings, and wielding ablue double-bladed lightsaber. This is almost completely unprecedented, and goes pretty clearly against previously held conceptions about double-bladed sabers.
Star Wars: Every Jedi Who Survived Order 66 (In Canon)
Clone Protocol Order 66 caused once-loyal Clone troopers in Star Wars to wipe out the Jedi, but a handful managed to survive this initial purge.
This Jedi is not long for the mortal world, though, as she and her comrades are slain as part of the Great Jedi Purge. This is not unlike the fate of Jaro Tapal inJedi: Fallen Order, giving the only two Clone Wars era Jedi wielders of double-bladed lightsabers remarkably similar fates. With this more recent instance of this rare scenario bringing it to mind once again, it’s only a matter of time untilStar Warsbrings yet another case of a Jedi wielding the stereotypical dark side lightsaber to canon.
