Watts describes Ravi Cabot-Conyers' Wim as “a total starry-eyed dreamer who just rushes into any situation before he’s thought about it for one second,” and likens Wim’s character to Cabot-Conyers' true, excited nature. As for Kiera Armstrong’s Fern,Watts has aStar Warscharacter who serves as her direct inspiration: Princess Leia herself. “We wanted a kid that was really smart and could play the good, sweet daughter of someone in the government,” Watts reveals, “but also be a tough rebel trying to stand up to bullies.” Watts asserts that Armstrong has “that intelligence and duality,” which made her intentional in all her decisions while acting. This duality is already seen in Fern inSkeleton Crew’s trailer, as she easily and calmly takes the lead of their ragtag group.
Kyriana Kratter’s KB Is “Strangely Quiet & Thoughtful”
Kratter Herself Inspired This Character’s Personality
Interestingly enough, co-creator Chris Ford has revealed that Kyriana Kratter’s portrayal of KB is what ultimately shaped her character inSkeleton Crew, transforming what was written in early drafts for Fern’s best friend. “I remember when we saw Kyriana’s audition for KB and she was just kind of strangely quiet and thoughtful,” Ford explains, assuring audiences thatit was a very specific choice to adhere to this portrayal. KB already sounds like a perfect balance for her best friend, adding what will no doubt be a necessary contemplative member of an otherwise excitable group.
How Robert Timothy Smith Shaped Neel’s Character
He Brought Comedic Edge To Neel’s Sweetness
Kratter wasn’t the only one who changed the shape of her character. According to Watts, Robert Timothy Smith accomplished the same feat with Neel, with Watts lovingly describing Smith as “a total wild card.” While Neel was initially thought to be “this sweet, shy little blue elephant-like alien,“Smith “always came at it at this other oblique angle,” which Watts accredits to him being a “comedian” with various jokes and bits that still land sweetly. Many viewers are already endeared to Neel, and it sounds as if the comedic edge to his sweetness will only make him more beloved.

Last but certainly not least is Nick Frost’s SM-33, a name that’s derived directly from the classic pirate Smee. Watts reveals the process behind how they got SM-33’s personality on set despite him being a droid, with them making use of prerecorded dialogue to have Nick Frost’s “great and specific comedic timing” to help “everyone understand the tone and the vibe of SM-33.” It sounds as if SM-33 will be a great rival to K-2SO ofRogue One: A Star Wars Storyas a droid with its own humorous personality, providing light toSkeleton Crew’s dangerous journey.
