Don’t be surprised byLobo’scasting for the newSupergirlfilm, as he was actually meant to be a big part of the comic seriesSupergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Jason Momoa’s casting has sent the internet into a frenzy, but it turns out that Lobo was once a part of Kara Zor-El’s masterpiece story.
It was roughly a year ago when James Gunn and Peter Safran, co-heads of DC Studios, revealed that one of the first films their studio would be putting out would be an adaptation ofSupergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. After the news hit, writer Tom King spoke with the podcast Word Balloon.
“That book [Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow] began as me pitching a Lobo [and] Supergirl book. It was my editor[s], Brittany Holzherr and Jamie Rich, who were like ‘No, take Lobo out and make Supergirl the Rooster Cogburn character.'” It wouldn’t exist without Jamie and Brittany.”
During the interview, King spoke about the origins of his series and made the shocking reveal that it began with him pitching a story about Supergirl and Lobo traveling together. However, Lobo’s inclusion was cut out, forcing King to rework his story into what becameSupergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

News of the project had been quiet for some time, but fans rejoiced when it was announced thatLobo was going to be part of the film and played by Jason Momoa.
It shouldn’t come as a shock that Lobo would be appearing in this film. Tom King has been working with DC Studios onLanternsshow as a producer and Gunn has previously praised King’s work. It’s not unlikely that King told Gunn what his initial vision for the comic was and Gunn is interested in producing a film that’s more like what King had in mind. It’ll be interesting to see how this changes the story when the film comes around,but it will be nice to see a more realized vision of what Tom King wanted in his story.
