Mr. Drummond’s Death Explained: How Mark’s Outie Accidentally Kills Him
Lumon’s Enforcer Suffered A Dark Fate
The major death that happened inSeveranceseason 2’s finale was Mr. Drummond. Since theending ofSeveranceseason 2, episode 2, Mr. Drummond has been highlighted as an integral part of Lumon’s operation, making his death even more consequential. Mr. Drummond’s role inSeverance’s season 2 finale was ritualistic, in a way. Drummond was sent to sacrifice one of the goats fromSeverance’s Mammalians Nurturable department as a symbolic final act in Gemma’s transition to meet Kier - or death, in other words - now that Cold Harbor had been completed.
Severance: Lumon’s Goat Department Explained
As Helly and Mark venture around the severed floor in Severance season 2, they discover more about the mysterious goat room and their purpose.
However, Drummond’s sacrifice was interrupted by Mark’s Innie, who was heard trying to break down the door leading to the Testing Floor. After a brief fight, Mark got the upper hand over Drummond thanks to the aid of Gwendoline Christie’s Lorne. Mark used the gun that was intended to sacrifice that goat to keep Drummond hostage and enter the Testing Floor, yet it was established earlier that Innie Mark would become his Outie upon taking the elevator down a level.

Herein lies how Mr. Drummond was accidentally killed. Innie Mark is shown holding the gun up to Drummond’s neck as the elevator descends and Outie Mark takes over.During the brief moment of transition between Innie and Outie, Mark’s body tenses and he accidentally pulls the trigger, mortally injuring Drummond, who later bleeds out.

Undoubtedly one of the most pressing questions afterSeverance’s season 2 finale is what will become of Mark. Not only did Mark kill Drummond in this episode, albeit accidentally, but he also stopped Lumon from carrying out what was said to be one of the greatest days in the company’s history by interrupting the Cold Harbor ceremony and freeing Gemma. Before now, Mark’s rebellious nature has been permitted by Lumon asSeverance’s Eagan familydesperately needed him to finish Cold Harbor. AfterSeveranceseason 2, Mark’s acts of rebellion took a darker turn than ever with Drummond’s death.
This must mean that Mark is fired from Lumon inSeveranceseason 3, but he now knows too much that could harm the company…

Moreover, Mark stalled the overarching plan Lumon had worked on for several years. This must mean that Mark is fired from Lumon inSeveranceseason 3, but he now knows too much that could harm the company, from Cold Harbor and Lumon’s true intentions to their kidnapping and death-faking antics with Gemma and everything else Cobel told him. Letting Mark go could be a bad move for Lumon if they want to keep public appearances - and their sinister plans - up, but the murder of Drummond makes the question of Mark’s fate inSeveranceseason 3 a massively intriguing one that needs answering.
Mark’s Fate Is Not The Only Unclear Result Of Drummond’s Death
Another big question forSeveranceseason 3 to answer is how Lumon will be impacted by Drummond’s death. Mark’s future will certainly be impacted by the event, but Lumon has now lost a key figure in their operation. Mr. Drummond was shown to have a varied skillset that aided Lumon in many ways, be it as Helena Eagan’s bodyguard, a spy that could gain information from Outies, or an outright enforcer for Lumon’s other employees like Mr. Milchick and Dr. Mauer.
“Devour Feculence”: Why Milchick Says THAT To Drummond In Severance Season 2 & What It Means For His Job At Lumon
Tramell Tillman’s Seth Milchick stands his ground by telling Mr. Drummond to “devour feculence,” putting his position in Severance at risk.
Now that he is dead, Lumon is all but guaranteed to struggle to fill that position. AcrossSeverance’s two seasons thus far, Lumon has lost important people such as Grainer, Cobel, and now Drummond. Drummond’s loss could well prove to be the biggest of them all by drastically shifting the security and power dynamics of Lumon. For this reason, and the consequences Mark himself will face, Drummond’s death is sure to have a huge impact onSeveranceseason 3.
