After the massive success of the first two seasons, I wouldn’t be surprised ifSquid Gameseason 3 sets up the upcoming U.S. spinoff. After a long three-year wait,Squid Gameseason 2 finally debuted on Netflix in December 2024. In the season, Gi-hun returns to the games to try to put an end to them once and for all and help a new group of players. However, Gi-hun’s rebellion unfortunately fails at theend ofSquid Gameseason 2, and it looks like things will only get worse for him in the third season.
TheupcomingSquid Gameseason 3will be the final season of the hit Netflix series. While Gi-hun ends the second season at his most hopeless point yet, he will likely try once again to take downThe Front Manand stop the games in season 3. However, the third season will not be the end of the franchise, as aSquid GameU.S. spinoff has been confirmed.A theory suggests how the confirmed U.S. spinoff will connect toSquid Gameseason 3, and it is not ideal for Gi-hun and his heroic mission.

Even If Gi-hun Stops The Korean Games, The Squid Games Might Still Continue
The Games Are Possibly Being Held All Over The World In Squid Game
Ahead of the release of season 2,it was revealed that an AmericanSquid Gamespinoff was in development by none other than David Fincher, who has directed critically acclaimed thriller films such asGone Girl,Zodiac,Fight Club, andSe7en. Because of the incredible success of the Korean version of the show, a U.S.Squid Gamespinoff already would have been very exciting, but Fincher’s involvement makes it one of Netflix’s most anticipated upcoming releases. However, it is currently unknown how the American spinoff will be connected to the Korean series.
Squid Gamehas always been a very hopeless series, and this theory suggests that the show’s ending will also be incredibly despairing.

It’s possible that the U.S. games are completely separate from the games that are held on the mysterious island off the coast of Seoul. However, there’s also a chance that the U.S. spinoff will be set up inSquid Gameseason 3. If this is the case, then it’s likely that Gi-hun will once again fail in season 3. Ever since the ending of season 2, fans have theorized what Gi-hun’s fate will be in the third season. Some believe he will finally put an end to the games, but others have theorized thatGi-hun will become The Front Man.
At this point, it is hard to predict what will happen to Gi-hun and the other players inSquid Gameseason 3. However,if the final season of the Korean show does indeed set up the U.S. spinoff, this would likely confirm that Gi-hun will never be able to truly stop the games. Even if he somehow stops the Korean games, different versions of the games will be held in other countries all around the world.Squid Gamehas always been a very hopeless series, and this theory suggests that the show’s ending will also be incredibly despairing.
Squid Game Season 3 Setting Up Spinoffs Would Make Sense After The Show’s Massive Success
Squid Game Is One Of Netflix’s Most Popular Shows
Given the massive success ofSquid Game,it would be understandable if Netflix wanted to set up the U.S. spinoff in season 3.Squid Gameseason 3 will undoubtedly have millions of viewers, so teasing the American spinoff would encourage people to watch it when it eventually comes out. Since the Korean version of the show is already a major hit with Americans and viewers on the Western side of the world, the U.S. spinoff likely won’t struggle to find an audience. Furthermore, American audiences definitely love Fincher’s prior work, so his involvement will also draw them to the spinoff.
If Squid Game Season 3 Breaks This Unforgivable TV Rule, It Will Be Darker Than Anything The Show Has Done So Far
If my Squid Game season 3 theory is correct, fans are in for an extremely dark storyline that will break an unforgivable TV rule.
However, setting up theSquid GameU.S. spinoff in season 3 would be a smart strategy to get Korean audiences interested in the series. Korean dramas have become a huge genre in recent years, and manyK-dramas on Netflixhave found incredible success. Many Americans love K-dramas, but Netflix obviously also wants Korean viewers to watch American shows. Therefore, including a tease of the U.S. spinoff inSquid Gameseason 3 would arguably be the best way to make sure viewers from all over the world watch it.
I’m Not Sure If Squid Game Season 3 Should Be Used As A Backdoor Pilot For Spinoffs
Squid Game Season 3 Setting Up Spinoffs Could Impact The Quality Of Its Story
On the other hand, even though it would be a smart way for Netflix to ensure that exposure for the upcoming U.S. series is as high as possible, I’m not sure thatSquid Gameseason 3 should focus on setting up other spinoffs. Since a U.S. spinoff has already been confirmed, it is safe to assume that different versions of the games are held all over the world. Because of this,Squid Gameseason 3 could theoretically set up multiple spinoffs that are set in other countries. However, it’s likely that this would distract from the storyline of season 3.
Squid Gameseason 3 will be released on Netflix on August 10, 2025.
SinceSquid Gameseason 3 is the final season of the series, it needs to wrap up its storylines in a satisfying manner. If season 3 becomes too focused on setting up potential spinoffs and expanding the franchise, I think its narrative could suffer. Heading intoSquid Gameseason 3, I am most interested to see what will happen to Gi-hun and the other remaining players. Therefore, I would not criticize the show if it did not tease the U.S. spinoff at all. In fact, it may be better if the American spinoff is completely separate from the Korean show.
David Fincher’s American Squid Game Might Be Better Off As A Standalone Show
Does The U.S. Squid Game Spinoff Need To Be Connected To The Korean Show?
The reveal that there are games happening all over the world would be a very interesting twist for the franchise. Revealing that the games held on the island in South Korea are part of a much larger organization would be shocking for characters like Gi-hun. However, while Gi-hun’s reaction to this news would be great, this is not something that necessarily needs to be revealed inSquid Gameseason 3.
Instead, the Korean series could remain as a self-contained story, and the upcoming U.S. spinoff could also be completely standalone. The quality ofSquid Gameseason 3 shouldn’t be impacted by the upcoming American series. Similarly, the U.S. spinoff shouldn’t have to abide by the rules that have been established in the Korean show. Perhaps Fincher will want to set the U.S. spinoff in a completely different continuity. If this is the case, I would still be completely on board. Therefore, despite this theory, I don’t think the U.S. spinoff needs to be connected toSquid Gameseason 3.
