The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as their name states, have always been ninjas, butLeonardo’s redesign takes that title to the next level by going all-in on the shinobi visuals. Because the TMNT usually dwell in modern-day New York City, they tend to adhere more to modern trends – albeit with a ninja flair. Here, inNaruto’s ambiguously feudal setting, Leonardo is decked out in traditional shinobi garb that anyninja from Konohawould wear. Leonardo looks cooler than ever with his new mask, and conveying intimidation next tothe effortlessly imposing Sasuke Uchihais no small feat.
The Ninja Turtles bearing similarities to Konoha Anbu enhances the immersion for readers, as the creative team finds innovative ways to ground these characters and integrate them intoNaruto’s portrayal of ninja culture.

Leonardo’s redesign is more than a stylistic choice, as it has surprising ties toNarutolore. His mask in particular resembles those worn by the Anbu, operatives in a shinobi unit who are deployed by the Kage to carry out covert missions. Anbu wear masks to preserve their identity, just as Leonardo wears his to hide the fact that he has been mutated into a turtle.
