Today’s Connections Category Hints

FEBRUARY 01 #601

There are a lot of similar-sounding words in this puzzle, or that’s how it felt as I attempted to solve it. While I found it a little simpler, I also questioned several of my guesses before I submitted them, just because of seeing other words that might change them. However, if you trust your instincts, you should be able to get this one fast.

NYT Mini Crossword: 8 Strategies To Solve It Fast

This tricky little five by five crossword isn’t always as easy as it looks; here are a couple easy tips and tricks to beat your friends' times!

If you still need some help, there are plenty more clues that can help you solve the puzzle. The most straightforward are thecategory names, which you can see below.

NYT game The Mini

TINGE

TONE

This category I actually got later on, but that was because I thought some of the other categories were easier. That is in part due to MATCH,as I thought it was a potential word that could fit here before I knew exactly what the category was. I also wasn’t looking at these words until later, so that was part of it. There are a lot of small difficulties with this puzzle, although that could easily compound if you are not able to resolve them.

DETECTIVE

SUSPECT

This one was the second category I got, and I found it fairly easy. In context, I got the third category before anything else. If I hadn’t I thinkQUESTION would have been quite a big red herringthat would easily cause someone to stumble here. DEAL is another potential stumbling point, but I think I got very lucky with the category I got first without thinking too much about it. That then allowed me to clear this one with the same sort of simplicity, although it could have gone very different.

The Tiles game for the New York Times mobile app asks you to use various strategies to pair matching visual patterns together to build huge combos.

DISPUTE

QUESTION

This one felt obvious to me, but again I could see how that would not necessarily be the case. There are a lot of different ways someone could miss here, with MATCH likely being the biggest one.MATCH could take the place of QUESTION and change the nature of the category a little, but hopefully knowing the category name would keep you from that. I happened to select these words fairly instinctively and quickly, which saved me from a lot of frustration.

MATCH

POSE

This last one I also got last, but it did have the most potential to throw off other categories in my opinion. MATCH and DEAL were the biggest ones, as previously mentioned, but CHORD also was something I considered and then discarded for some of the categories. There are a lot ofdifferent ways to makeConnectionsharder or easier for yourself, and luckily today was one of the ways I made it easier for myself.
