Tom Hardy’s name alone is often enough to drum up excitement for a project. He’s starred in major blockbusters and small, scrappy indies, frequently playing characters that require some level of transformation from him. Though Bane in Christopher Nolan’sThe Dark Knight Rises(2012) remains one of his iconic characters, he’s also frequently played more heroic figures.

Hardy memorably took over from Mel Gibson as Max Rockatansky inMad Max: Fury Road(2015), and he’s now also widely known for his role as Eddie Brock/ Venom, recently saying farewell to that role with the release ofVenom: The Last Dance(2024). In terms of upcoming roles, there is hope that he’ll be reprising his role as Max inMad Max: The Wasteland(though chances of that look slim afterFuriosa’s underperformance), and he’s also set to appear inHavoc, a new film fromThe Raid(2011) director Gareth Evans. At least one movie that he was previously set to lead, however, now may not be happening.

Hardy Was Set To Play Sam Fisher

A producer attached to Hardy’sSplinter Cellmovie shares a disappointing update on the film. First announced back in 2012, the film was set to adapt the popularSplinter Cellvideo game franchise, which follows a black-ops operative named Sam Fisher as he carries out covert missions for the fictional Third Echelon agency. The games, of which there are now seven, have been popular titles since the franchise’s launch in 2002, butthe movie adaptation struggled to get off the ground throughout the 2010s, even afterThe Bourne Identity(2002) director Doug Liman reportedly became attachedin 2014.

Tom Hardy has consistently shown a willingness to make bold acting choices and push the boundaries throughout his illustrious movie career.

In a new interview withThe Directin celebration ofJohn Wick’s 10th anniversary, producer Basil Iwanyk seemingly confirms thattheSplinter Cellmovie starring Hardy is no longer happening. “That movie would have been awesome… Just couldn’t get it right, script-wise, budget-wise. But it was going to be great. We had a million different versions of it, but it was going to be hardcore and awesome. That’s one of the ones that got away, which is really sad.”

Ubisoft owns the publishing rights toSplinter Cell, as well as hit games/ franchises likeAssassin’s CreedandFar Cry.

What This Means For The Splinter Cell Movie

Sam Fisher’s Future Explained

While this update seemingly confirms that audiences won’t be seeingHardyas Fisher,it doesn’t necessarily mean that aSplinter Cellmovie will never happen. This particular iteration of the adaptation with this creative team may be dead, but others could eventually take a crack at adapting it into a feature film. Iwanyk’s update does, however, mean that aSplinter Cellmovie, if one ever does happen, is not going to be arriving anytime soon.

While a movie may be many years away, the video game franchise has been adapted into an upcoming TV show calledSplinter Cell: Deathwatch. This upcoming animated Netflix series features actorLiev Schreiber voicing Fisher, and is set to release in 2025. If the show is a hit, it could create renewed interest in getting a live-action movie off the ground.
