As DC fans still want to see Tom Welling’s Superman fromSmallvilleget a proper costume after theDCseries finale, the actor shares some intriguing insights into the Man of Tomorrow’s biggest debate. Following the conclusion of his show in 2011,Smallville’sWelling is ready to don the Superman costume, if he gets the chance to return to the role. But if Welling ever got to suit up as the Man of Steel again, there would be a lot to consider in terms of what version of the uniform to adapt from page to screen.

In an exclusive interview withScreen Rantat this year’s Comic Con Stockholm, Welling spoke about the continuing legacy ofSmallvillethrough theTalk Ville Podcast, and the upcoming Cruiseville event that is happening in 2025. As Superman has evolved over the years, including his costume designs, Welling was asked which iteration he would prefer if he ever played Superman again.

Welling added,“Oh my gosh, I didn’t even think about that,“when it was mentioned that the debate about Superman’s trunks has been happening for years, which included reference to how there were a lot of discussions when Henry Cavill’s Superman suit was revealed to the world. After asking if Cavill’s Superman suit did or didn’t have trunks, withScreen Rantinforming him that the DCEU star didn’t,Welling gave the following response on what he would want for his Superman suit if he reprised hisSmallvillecharacter:

Tom Welling: But the original Batman and Robin; they had trunks. But then now in the movies, they don’t have trunks, right? I think the more modern way would probably [mean] no trunks. I’m trying to imagine, I never thought about it before. One of the reasons I think I had been resistant to it [was] because of my own hang-ups. But now that I have two little boys, I think it’d be cool because they already call me that, which is cool. But I think that would be my preference or motivation.

What Tom Welling’s Superman Costume Debate Comments Mean For A Smallville Sequel Suit

While time will tell if Welling’s Superman will be back, the possibility is out there, as he andSmallville’sMichael Rosenbaum- who played Lex Luthor - have been developing an animated sequel series that would bring back the beloved characters to the screen. Through an animatedSmallvillerevival, tackling the trunks in this format could be easier, as the animation style could allow this approach to look more natural. However, the Superman trunks in live-action have always been either hit or miss, which could be crucial forSmallvilleif the show came back to its original format.

Even though it is animated series that they are pursuing,aSmallvillesequel TV showin live-action could always still happen, and if it does, viewers would be able to expect to see Welling finally in an actual Superman suit. Based on Welling’s commentary, whatever feels the best and most modern would be the direction for his Superman suit. It’s key to remember, though, that while Clark’s suit in theSmallvilleseries finale did have the trunks, the season 11 comic continuation saw Welling’s character quickly upgrade to a costume that didn’t have them.
