Warning: HUGE spoilers ahead for theSiloseason 2 premiere!Siloseason 2, episode 1, “The Engineer,” begins with Rebecca Ferguson’s Juliette Nichols entering a structure identical to the one she once called home, and although the episode does provide an explanation about what happened there, the sequence that addresses the devastation is brief. With the installment’s present-day sequences taking place immediately after theending ofSiloseason 1,the Apple TV+ dystopian sci-fi show continues Juliette’s storywithout missing a single second. While she may be free from the tyranny of her former superiors, her adventure is far from over.

A live-action adaptation of Hugh Howey’s novels,Apple TV+ changes several aspects ofSilo’s literary source material. However, the overall story remains largely the same. As the leader of theSilocast, Ferguson returns in season 2 as the saga’s main protagonist. Although she gives a great physical performance in “The Engineer,“theSiloseason 2 premiere gives Ferguson very little when it comes to dialogue. On the other hand, the episode’s opening scene isn’t short on artful exposition.

Season 2’s Opening Sequence Shows What Happened To The Second Silo

“The Engineer” begins with a flashback

The cold open of “The Engineer” is a flashback to the new Silo that it’s eventually revealed Juliette will soon come across and enter. The second Silo’s inhabitants looked to be in the final stages of a revolution very similar to the one that has been mentioned but never shown in Silo 18 - Juliette’s former home. As with Silo 18, there appears to be a violent disagreement about whether it’s safe to go outside.

The other Silo arguably acts as a worrying glimpse of what could have happened to Silo 18 if Juliette had been able to successfully convince the others inSiloseason 1 that outside was a safe environment.

A set of eyes peeking through a gap in Silo

The other Silo arguably acts as a worrying glimpse of what could have happened to Silo 18 if Juliette had been able to successfully convince the others inSiloseason 1 that outside was a safe environment. Although"The Engineer” never reveals quite how long ago the opening scene took placewithin the show’s canon, the state of the human remains that litter the inside and outside the building strongly suggests it was very far from a recent event.

Why The Citizens Of The Second Silo Went Outside

The Silo’s flooded lower levels probably caused the power failure

The rebel leader’s note says, “generator will flood in 15 minutes,” so the revolution may well have started due to the panic thatthe Silo was set to become uninhabitable because of the lack of power. Russell, who appears to be the leader of Mechanical, refuses to open the door to the surface. As such, the unfortunate inhabitants are stuck between a rock and a couple of hard places. Their options are to either stay in the Silo and die, slaughter each other in an attempt to force a compromise, or risk going outside and exposing a possible lie.

Siloseason 1 shows Juliette’s home is also filled with water at the bottom, so it may be a design flaw that will eventually doom all Silos to a similar fate.

Silo Spoilers: What Happens In The Books & Biggest Reveals

The other Silo once more acts as a cautionary tale. If Juliette hadn’t repaired Silo 18’s generator in season 1, the population of the show’s titular setting may very well have resorted to the same drastic measures as the doomed characters from the start of “The Engineer.” This proves just how important and talented Ferguson’s character is and how foolish her superiors were by sending her out to clean. Then again, the body of water in the other Silo was probably a major factor in the generator’s failure, so even Juliette may have been helpless.

Is The Man Behind The Door The Only Survivor Of The Second Silo?

Silo’s mysterious hermit may not be alone

The closing moments of theSiloseason 2 premiereintroduce a new character, who has locked himself inside a vault, with it being unclear how long he has been there. Another massive question is whether he is the only remaining member of his community, or whether there are other survivors somewhere else in the Silo - or even in his vault. His isolation, paired with his aggressive threat if Juliette tries to enter, suggests that the stranger isn’t particularly used to encountering new individuals, and even actively avoids and tries to prevent such scenarios.

Silo Spoilers: What Happens In The Books & Biggest Reveals

Here’s a breakdown of all the biggest reveals from the original Hugh Howey Silo books that unfold after the events of the Silo show’s season 1 ending.

On the other hand, it could also be thatSilo’s new character is keeping not just himself safe from outsiders, but also protecting fellow inhabitants of his vault. It’s also not beyond the realm of possibility that the man is not even a survivor of the massacre in question. He could simply be an outsider like Juliette, banished from his original Silo and left to wander the ruined surface of the planet. If so, it seems unlikely that they won’t establish some kind of dynamic asSiloseason 2 progresses.
