Why Marty Imagines That Shauna Is Teen Lottie

When Shauna is in Lottie’s bedroom, Marty believes she is his teenage daughter. The episode shows this happening through Marty’s eyes as he sees teenage Lottie before him, even though it is Shauna talking to him. This is because dementia can cause the brain to combine elements of the past and present together. Being in Lottie’s bedroom brings back memories of her, including both the frustration he felt and the love he has for his daughter. This gets combined with the present reality of Shauna being present in the bedroom.

He gets a sense of closure that he likely never had with Lottie, making it a truly bittersweet scene inYellowjackets.
