Based on Child’s seventh novel, the third series sees Reacher going undercover with a rug importer to both rescue a missing DEA informant, and seek revenge on a man he thought he’d killed years before.
Reacherseason 3 has received great reviewsand has all the action and suspense audiences love about the series. WhereasReacherseason 2 adaptedBad Luck and Troubleand ended up changing a lot about the original plot, the new series is proving faithful to the source text. Of course, certain subplots or storylines have been streamlined, but those who read the novel will recognize most of the key beats in the show.

There are plenty of novelsReacherfans want to see adapted, including61 HoursandTripwire.Reacherseason 3 adapts the 2003 novelPersuader, which is rightfully considered one of the author’s best.Persuaderis a taut thriller where the title character always feels like he’s only half a step away from being discovered or killed, with the hastily constructed undercover plan he concocted with DEA agent Susan Duffy being filled with unexpected holes.
The novel is also noted forthe epic Reacher vs Paulie fight, which is one of the few times in the saga it felt like the main character could actually die.After the bombast of the second season, it was a good call forReacher’sshowrunners to adapt a smaller storyfor the new series. The book is littered with great characters and setpieces, and while a movie adaptation would have had to trim a lot to get to a feature runtime, a television series can let the plot breathe in the ways it should.
Reacher Season 3 Is Largely Faithful To Lee Child’s Persuader Book
Episode 3’s opening chase is lifted almost word for word
Reacherseason 3 opens with a great twist, where it appears Alan Ritchson’s anti-hero is being a good citizen and saving a young man from being kidnapped. This turns out not to be the case at all, as this youngster is Richard Beck (Johnny Berchtold), the son of rug importer Zach Beck (Anthony Michael Hall).The attempted kidnapping and subsequent gunfight and car chase were elaborately mapped out to convince Richard to bring Reacher backto his father’s compound.
The opening of “Persuader” is very faithful to the novel, to the extent that it spends time explaining how Reacher and the DEA team pulled off their fake kidnapping. Episode 1 does make some tweaks along the way though. Richard has two bodyguards in the source text instead of one, while Reacher is carryingtworevolvers instead of one. On the whole,season 3 goes to great lengths to bring Child’s work to the screen. The Russian roulette test is there, as is Reacher’s antagonistic relationship with both Paulie and Beck’s right-hand man, Duke (Donald Sales).
The title of the novel is a reference to the “Persuader” model shotgun.
While Reacher enters Beck’s compound looking for a missing woman named Theresa, the details are changed up.Theresa is a fellow DEA agent inPersuader, while in the show she’s one of Duffy’s confidential informerswho was sent undercover. Both the series and novel see Reacher uncover a secret basement Theresa was held in, from which she was recently moved. Her faith beyond that is a mystery thatPersuader(and likely, the series) tease out for a long time.
Reacher Season 3 Makes A Few Changes To Persuader
A Beck family is missing a member
The second season brought some major changes toBad Luck and Trouble, including beefing up the screentime of villain A.M. (Ferdinand Kingsley) and adding a new supporting player with Russo (Domenick Lombardozzi).Reacherseason 3 doesn’t make so many tweaks, but there are some big changes. The biggest difference is adding a role for Neagley (Maria Sten), a recurring character in the books who played no role at all in Child’sPersuader.
Reacher calls his bestie Neagley for information on the people he’s investigating, but despite wanting to get involved, he insists she stay out of it. Neagley is working in Chicago during the first few episodes of season 3 - and it’s a safe bet she will become more involved in later outings.Another big alteration is removing Elizabeth Beck, wife of Zach and mother of Richard. In the novel, the Beck family is essentially being held hostage by the vicious gunrunner Quinn (Brian Tee) - the man Reacher is seeking vengeance on.

In addition to being a prisoner, Elizabeth is also the target of unwanted sexual advances by Paulie, who is depicted as a far grosser character inPersuader. Reacher and Elizabeth form a connection in the novel, but Amazon’sReachermakes it clear from the first episode she has been dead for years.It appears Richard will be given the bulk of Elizabeth’s role, such as the passage where Reacher has to drive him into town. It was a smart move to fuse the characters, as it streamlines the narrative even further.
Season 3 adds another subplot in the form of the bodyguard Duffy and her team seizing Richard Beck’s bodyguard and holding him indefinitely. Considering the novel is entirely from Reacher’s POV, it was smart to give the DEA team something to do whilst waiting for updates from the hulking drifter. Episode 2, “Truckin'” introduces another of Beck’s henchmen in the form of Angel Doll (Manuel Rodriguez-Saenz), who escorts Reacher to a police impound lot to check out the vehicle the supposed kidnapper drove.
In both the live-action and book versions, Angel Doll serves the same purpose; prodding Reacher about the gaps in his cover story until Jack just kills him.

All that gets him is a paper spike to the brain though.
Beyond the above, the rest of the changesReacherseason 3 has made are negligible. For instance,Reachercarries an actual phone in his boot, but in the book, it’s a tiny device that sends emails to Duffy. Paulie is Dutch instead of American, which is only fitting as Olivier Richters is known as “The Dutch Giant.” The gun Reacher acquires is a Makarov inPersuader, but a Heckler & Koch P7 in the series, and so on.
