Someone was watching Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton) at the patch party inLandmanepisode 7, but the show didn’t explicitly show who it was or what it meant for the future of the series. There are several different storylines that tie thecast ofLandmanto one another, and the various parts of the oil industry and Tommy’s personal life often overlap.Landmanepisode 7 has started yet another crossover between Tommy’s professional and personal lives through the man who was watching him at the patch party, and it could easily be the most deadly yet.

Towards theend ofLandmanepisode 7, Tommy had to find Ainsley (Michelle Randolph) at the patch party she went to. When he arrived, he had to pull her new love interest, Ryder (Mitchell Slaggert), off her, and he gave the quarterback a beating and a stern talking to. As he left, however,Landmanrevealed that someone was watching Tommy with a pair of night vision binoculars, but it wasn’t someone instantly recognizable. The fact that someone is keeping tabs on Tommy and his family is almost certainly going to be important to the remainder ofLandmanseason 1, so it’s important to know who was watching him.

The Cartel Were Watching Tommy In Landman Episode 7

The Cartel Is Keeping Tabs On Tommy & His Family

The person who was watching Tommy at the patch party was a member of the cartel he’s been having trouble with all season long. Earlier inLandmanepisode 7, a few members of the cartel visited Tommy at an oil rig, only to be run off by Boss' (Mustafa Speaks) gangster roughnecks. The cartel clearly learned that they wouldn’t be able to touch Tommy while he was on the job, but his personal life is filled with far fewer gun-toting oil workers. Tommy, and his family, are much more vulnerable outside the oil field, and the cartel now knows that.

Are The Cartel Planning To Kill Tommy Or Attack His Family?

There’s No Good Reason Why The Cartel Would Be Watching Tommy’s Family

It’s safe to assume that the cartel isn’t running surveillance on Tommy and his family for any benevolent reason. After the plane crash inLandmanepisode 1, the cartel has been hounding Tommy, looking for repayment - or retribution - for all the cocaine that burned up on MTex’s land. Tommy, however, was less than willing to negotiate with them. The cartel may be monitoring Tommy to find out when the best time to attack him and his family would be. Eliminating Tommy would make it a lot easier to destroy MTex’s property to get the oil company off the cartel’s land.

It is important to note that the man who was watching Tommy at the patch party was already set up just moments after Tommy arrived, which he wouldn’t have been able to do if he had been following Tommy. It seems he was actually watching Ainsley, not Tommy, and that the cartel could be planning to take Angela (Ali Larter) and Ainsley hostage - or worse - to get Tommy to listen to their demands. If the cartel eventually does kidnap Tommy’s wife and daughter, there’s no chance he would value Monty’s (Jon Hamm) profit margins above their lives, and he may very well give in to them.

The Cartel Story Is Likely Going To Be Landman Season 1’s Endgame

Landman’s Cartel Story Has Been Building Suspense All Season

Whatever ends up happening with Tommy and the cartel will likely be saved for the season finale ofLandman. The show has been building up the tension between MTex and the cartel all season, and it seems perfectly poised to make their fight into a spectacle worthy of ending the season on.The finale ofLandmanseason 1 could see the cartel kidnap Angela and Ainsley or see Tommy round up some of his toughest roughnecks to bring the fight to them. Seeing Tommy put his life at risk for his wife and daughter would be the perfect place to end the Norris family drama.

Landman True Story & Inspiration Explained: What To Know About The Texas Oil Boom

Landman introduces audiences to the world of the Permian Basin’s oil industry. Here’s the real-life basis for the show’s subject explained.

Bringing the conflict with the cartel to a head would also be the perfect way to fully bring Tommy and Monty’s storylines together. If the cartel gets to be a big enough threat, Monty won’t be able to rely on Tommy to handle it by himself anymore. The cartel would be the perfect excuse to let Monty bring in the big guns and really flex his financial and business muscles. The cartel also doesn’t seem like the type of storyline that would be saved forLandmanseason 2, which seems like further evidence that things will come to a head at the end ofLandmanseason 1.
