AStardew Valleyplayer was left regretting their decision to divorcePennyafter a poorly-timed bit of dialogue from their soon-to-be-ex-wife. Divorce is as big a part ofStardew Valleyas is marriage. Although it’s not necessarily pleasant, easy, or cheap, it does happen: sometimes, you fall out of love with your 16-bit spouse. Sometimes it’s done for more practical reasons - maybe you don’t like what they’ve done to your house, or you want another bachelor’s unique decor.

Whatever reason Reddit userMonkePoopyyhad for divorcing theirStardew Valleywife, though, they instantly regretted it upon arriving home to find Penny marveling at her wedding amulet, gushing about its beauty and how much it must have cost. This is a pretty common post-marriage line of dialogue for Penny, but regardless, the timing was downright sinister. It’s a bit of ham-fisted irony straight out of a bad soap opera, but that doesn’t mean it hurts any less.

Stardew Valley Sebastian and farmer

Fellow players wasted no time in calling out MonkeyPoopyy’s cruelty, wondering why they’d even want to divorce Penny in the first place. One user,ReneLeMarchand, responded with an ingeniously edited image of Penny’s in-game portrait, her usual affable smile on her face as she winds up a punch.

Players Respond To Unfortunate Stardew Valley Divorce Timing

“Pam’s Going To Drive You Both Into A Hill”

The original poster made it clear thatthey had no malicious intent in divorcing Penny; they just wanted toget Krobus as a roommateinstead. Even so, players didn’t take kindly to the news. Another user,National-Collar-9651suggested that Penny’s mother,Pam, would be out for revenge. Pam is as notorious for her stubbornness, her temper, her protectiveness, and her fits of binge-drinking as she is for the old, decrepit bus she drives, so none of that is particularly out of character for her.

Not everyone jumped to Penny’s defense, though. Others could relate, as they divorcedtheir ownStardew Valleypartnersfor one reason or another, only to come to regret that after seeing their reactions. One user,dvalin1, rescinded their filing for divorceafter coming home to find their husband,Harvey, cooking them breakfast.

Divorce isn’t something to be taken lightly, even inStardew Valley. To begin the process, players have to spend 50,000g in order to file the papers, but their relationship with their former spouse will be immediately (though not permanently) soured. It’s clear that the original poster didn’t intend to offend this virtual character, but even then, they were sorely hurt by the consequences of their own actions.

Our Take: Stardew Valley Can Be Unintentionally Funny

Or Heartbreaking, Depending On Your Point Of View

As much fun as it is to orchestrate ridiculous situations inStardew Valley, sometimes, it creates the humor all on its own. Think the bug that repeatedly implied Abigail enjoyed eating rocks and minerals (which was eventually left in as a joke), ortiny snakes appearing in the grasswhen the textures line up just so.

“I’M A GUY???": Stardew Valley Player Finds Out They’ve Misgendered Themselves By Accident

A Stardew Valley player discovers that, to their surprise, they’ve been playing as a male character, during a romantic moment with Sebastian.

At the same time, though, the tiniest stroke of luck can create tragedy. Penny choosing this line at this moment was no more than random number generation, but it was timed so perfectly that it made the player second-guess a relatively innocuous decision. It’s little moments like these that makeStardew Valleyfeel alive.

Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley is a charming indie farming scene that took the world by storm. After inheriting a run-down farm from their grandfather, the player moves to Stardew Valley to start a new life away from the city. Grow crops, raise animals, befriend the villagers, and discover the secrets the valley has to offer.
